Air Filter Change --> Check Engine Light???

Hey guys. Quick Q:

'05 G35 Sedan 6MT. Just replaced the air filter today (just a normal paper filter), and shortly thereafter, my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. When I took it on the freeway I noticed that it seemed like it was struggling to rev up / it didn't rev up as fast as it used to. It would hit about 4 or 5,000 RPMs and then it would "catch" and rev up normally. It was sluggish almost like forgetting to take off the e-brake. It never had this issue before and the light has never come on when I've worked on it before. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. There is one thing to consider. Right before I changed the filter I was performing a cooling system flush and had just drained all the coolant. I needed to move the car, so I turned it on for 10 seconds (max) to move it 3 feet over. On the 20 minute freeway drive, the temperature was perfectly normal and there seemed to be no major issues. Could I have possibly damaged the water pump?

I just want to get the dummy light GONE and fix it correctly!

Thanks in advance for the help!

What normal paper filter?

Replace it with a OEM Air Filter and see if the "Service Engine Soon" disappears.

I just have to assume he didn't use a coffee filter. as far as oem vs fram etc shouldn't cause cel to come on.

Paper filter as in not an oil K&N filter and not a cone filter. Here is the one I got:

http://m.oreillyauto.com/h5/r/oap/site/c/detail/MGD3/MGA46116/02512.oap?year=2005&make=Infiniti&model=G35&vi=143 1975&ck=Search_Air+Filter_1431975_3659&search=true &keyword=Air%20Filter

Just a simple $10 MicroGard filter.

I'm also considering just upgrading the intake system entirely. I've read through the forums and some say that the stock is fine with a K&N filter, others say the stock design is flawed and to get a z-tube and a pod filter. However, I've heard pod filters may actually lower HP slightly. Any suggestions?

I'll be with family all day today (Sunday). I'll hit up my local store tomorrow and get the code. Thanks for the responses!

Return to O'reillys auto parts store and have them check the error code! This way we're not guessing what you may have or not messed up installing the drop in air filter. They'll let you know why you're getting the error code...Gary

So the OBD-II test returned 5 codes:

- C1130
Engine Signal 1 (The code means that the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control unit has detected that there is problem with the Engine Control Module (ECM).)

- P1564
ASCD Steering Switch (Cruise control)

- P0102
Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input

- P0113
Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit High

- P0456
EVAP Control System Very Small Leak Detected

The EVAP control system I don't understand. I added a HEET fuel system cleaner to the tank on my last fill up, so something might have gone awry there. The cruise control switch was faulty when I got the car. To remedy the other codes I'll just remove and reinstall the air intake system to see what happens. Any other ideas? Should I just replace the air intake system with a new one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

well c1130 is prob your ABS module. but i think you need the dealership diagnostic computer to pinpoint what has failed.

p1564 is prob just a bad steering wheel switch. just need to replace

p0102 clean you MAF sensor and be sure it is plugged in well.

p0113 refers to the intake air temp. if you have an OHM meter check that the sensor is getting power and everything is connected well. also check the grounds.

p0456 it could be just a bad gas cap seal. or you have a leak somewhere in the evap system. check the gasket on your gas cap and be sure there is no debris to cause it to not seal.

You probably cracked intake coupler near the TB and you're taking in air after the MAF. It's old rubber that's seen many heat cycles.
