The june Road & Track has a test report on the Dodge SRT-4 - "sends 222 bhp ... to its front wheels. Then using a coast-down test ... calculated drivetrain loss at about 16 bhp,,, calculating 238 bhp at its crankshaft...
The numbers posted here on the G35C show about 225 hp at the wheels or about a 55 hp loss from the SAE ratings or ~20%. The Dodge article implies a loss of ~7 %. Any explainations on the difference in how rating calculations?

front engine front wheel drive eliminates the need for a drive shaft
front engine rear wheel drive needs a drive shaft to get power to the rear. that shaft causes alot of power loss because it weighs alot.

Couldn't weight also be another factor for more hp? So if the SRT-4 was rwd then it would be slower? So if you say that it is because of the fwd wont that mean the Maxima should be faster than the G35 sedan and coupe?

Speed is a combination of HP, Torque, weight, and gearing. By swapping out the primary drive gear in the differential from say a 3.08 to a 3.55 you can effectively drop you 0-60 time by .4 to .5 sec. Transmission gear ratios can be radically different as well. take the same car and change the tranny gearing with a 3.27 primary gear in the differential but one car has a 3.90-1 first gear and and 300-1 second the other a 3.60-1 first and a 2.90 second. The 3.90-1 would be faster in initial acceleration through at least 2nd gear.
Weight for every 100lbs you can almost expect to gain .1 sec in the 1/4 mile.

So I dont get if FWD looses less from the tranny then why isnt the Max or Altima faster than the G35 or the SRT-4?

Front drivers have a hard time putting all that power to the pavement bro. Soon as you gun it, the wheels have a tendency to break loose.
Rear drivers on the other hand have good weight transfer which all ends up sitting on those rear drive wheels.
BTW -- I'm not so sure that the Max or the Altima is slower than the G. From what I've read they're all about the same from 0-60. On the twisties.......that's another story. [img]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/img]

There are differences in how dyno's report HP. Yes, the 4-500 LBS differnece can account for the times, the .1 sec per 100 lbs seems to work. Drive shaft and those things don't effect the hp, just the time it takes to wind up the mass. Anyway, enjoy the ride...

There are altimas out there running 14.1 to 14.3 stock, modded as low as 13.6 (i/e/pulley only), heck i pulled a 14.5 in my auto with full interior at 1500 ft uncorrected. maximas are running 14.3 stock, there is one modded max with the 3.5 in the 12's (nitrous/slicks) these cars are all the same in the straight it is the twisties that make the difference.

I have a hard time buying that a stock Altima (240 hp) can do the 1/4 mile in 14.1 secs. Fastest time I've seen for the G35 was a member on here who pulled 14.1 with the 6MT. The G35 has 20 more HP and is lighter then the Altima...
I could be wrong, but seriously doubt it...

I saw a review where they got a standard Altima 3.5 to do 5.9sec to 60. When they tested the car they took of the rims, used a lighter driver, and took out the ac and the radio.

Fastest time i've seen for the stock 5 speed Altima is 6.3 seconds in Car & Driver Magazine. The Automatic is 7.1 seconds (Road & Track Magazine)
The reason I don't beleive engine mods will help your 0-60 time to much is because the Altima is a front wheel drive car. Any hard take offs results in serious torque steer and the front end jumping all over the place (this hurts your 0-60 times). Only way to improve it would be to get serious mods done to your suspension to handle the torque steer and bunny hopping.
Reason I know this, is because my newphew has a a 3.5 Altima 5 speed. After driving his car several times and then the G35, I decided it was worth the extra money to get the rear wheel drive car and not have to deal with the terriable torque steer.

That 13.6 is real. Go read about it in the racing section at altimas.net. There are 3.5SE autos running 14.5 with exhaust and intake. Motor Trend got 5.9sec 0-60 and 14.4 1/4 mile on a stock 3.5SE.
