Best fuel system cleaner? Do they even work?

What is the best (recommended) fuel system cleaner you guys have heard of? I have 35K on my coupe and feel I should do this just because I have seen carbon deposits on other engines, but all the cleaners swear they are the best.

Any objective findings? Any recommendations from professionals? Anyone had really good, noticeable results?

Thanks

In no way am I a professional and call me old fashioned but I've always been a proponent of using Chevron Gas with Techron. True, its just gas however I do believe that Techron significantly helps. On my previous high mileage vehicle, I calculated out better gas mileage when I used Techron as opposed to other gasolines. Of course that could be entirely situational and may have nothing whatsoever to do with the Techron, but who knows. Anyway what can it hurt?

As far as additives are concerned, I've been pleased with Lucas products. Relatively inexpensive and they get the job done.

I just reviewed my little spreadsheet where I track my gas mileage. It looks like I get slightly better mileage (~1-2 mpg) when I use 76 gas, vs. Costco & Arco (I was out of town & needed gas!). I've only used Chevron once but it was the same as w/ 76.

Granted, driving conditions & style vary, but here's the MPG averages since I've had the car (Aug '04):
Chevron 19.5
Union 76 19.3
Costco 17.8
Arco 17.6

I read in a R&T article a while back and they did a test on various fuel treatment brands, and they tested STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner as most effective. They had some before and after pics and it showed how much cleaner the pistons and valves were. I was actually inpressed.

Chevron is great... It cleared up an injector issue I had in my Jeep... Chevron is the best gas you can get, in many cases Dodge/Chysler trucks it in for test drives on their proving grounds...

**WARNING**

Here is what the manual said in the book:

"Aftermarket fuel additves: INFINITI does not reccomend the use of any fuel additives such as fuel injector, octane booster, intake valve depositi removers, etc.). Many of these additives intended for gum, varnish or deposit removal may contain active solvent or similiar ingredients that can be harmful to the fuel syste and engine."

So, i would advice you guys not to use the aftermarket fuel additives. Kinda waste of money and just use higher octane fuel such Octane 91 or higher (knock-free). That is all you need.

if you are using 93 octane as recommended, you should have no need for additives

I agree. A case of 4 of those at Costco is $7 or so. I put one in after every 7500 mile service. Smooth as glass at 52000 miles.

I know of one Infiniti dealer that uses BG 44k fuel additive as part of their fuel injection cleaning. I have heard good things about the BG products in general; don't know if it is good marketing or truly a good product.

I have used the BG products line as well and I believe the Proguard is just as effective.
