Bad oil cooler relief valve and drain down?

I have a 2006 g35x with a little timing chain rattle during startup. I've changed the primary chain tensioner already.

Would a bad oil relief valve in the factory oil cooler cause oil drain down when sitting for a couple of hours? Anyone have experience with this?

I'm not ready to tear off the front cover to replace the chain/guides just yet.
