Is it necessary to have your ECU reprogramed when modding..???

question for anybody out there. I see alot of people modding their cars, but not doing a thing with their ECU's. To me this is a bit confusing. Does the ECU pick up and make changes on it's own? When I previously had my Bimmer, I modded it to hell and called up Bavarian Auto and told them what mods I had, emailed them an image of my dyno numbers (A/F included) and they custom tuned an ECU for me. The price was about 600 dollars. This type of tuning makes complete sense.

My question is, do I have to have my ECU reprogrammed after I get my mods installed? What is recommended? If getting my ECU is the way to go, where can I get one. I looked up Technosquare and I do not like what they do. They do basic tuning and not tuning to meet your needs, so you don't get the most out of your mods. Any suggestions?? thanks

Another option is the Unichip . There are several local shops that can program these to your exact vehicle. Although there doesn't appear to be a lot of data regarding the UniChip and the G, I am having one installed on Thursday. I'll be posting dyno's when I am done.

You sir are brave. Is it ready for the G yet, the website only had a coming soon for the FX. From what I've heard with the WRX, most hated the unichip with lots of CEL.

I sure hope it's ready. If not, I am gonna be pretty upset when I show up at ModaCar on Thursday.

The website actually has a couple of Dyno's for the G (intake, headers, and exhaust). Not sure if they are for sedan or coupe.

Technosquare could probably do a custom tune based on your mods, but if not, for that level of personal service, you might want to consider waiting for a couple of other tuners like Jim Wolf, Z1 Motorsports to do custom programs for you. Jim Wolf has not tackled the Z33 or V35 ECU yet, but I suspect it won't be long.

Overall, though, I wouldn't expect a huge difference from a custom tune if you just do basic bolt-ons.

It's not necessary to reprogram the ECU. The G35 uses a Mass Airflow Sensor to meter the air going into the motor. It automatically compensates. The closed-loop feedback from the O2 sensors would also help but it would likely adjust no more than the OEM set-up unless something is seriously wrong with the airflow reading. Reprogramming the ECU sould still potentially add more power through more agressive fuel and timing maps, and may even make slightly more power if tuned for the mods, but the difference would not be that significant with just simple bolt-ons.

after crawford plenum, crawford cats, stillen intake/dual exhaust i was running lean, which I identified by pulling the #1 plug. And i did ECU resets after every mod.

It was time to do the TS ECU. Tadashi spent about an hour, literally, reprgramming my ECU in Hex-edit. He didn't much like me lookey-looing, but man... I just love code! He does not just "flash and pack 'em", you need to tell him your mods and he takes his time as to what you need and what you're planning to do with the car.

Cheers, Ted

Anyone having problems with CEL needs to do either of 2 things:

1) switch to map A which has a slightly more conservative timing map. Some cars are very sensitive to detonation (the G is one of them by the way)

2) have map B custom programmed by a Unichip programmer.

that's pretty cool..ill definitely go with TS...I was looking at their website and I'll probably give them a call after my mods are all installed...wondering if they will sell me a programmed ECU, vs. sending mine in...ill call and find out..
