Hot Air Intake on the G35

Hot Air Intake on the G35
Hey guys, I just noticed this the other day while peeking around under the hood. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this too. It appears to be a hot air intake and has the words "POWER DUCT" written on it. I took a couple of pictures of it. It was nighttime though so I took them with Night Vision on. Lemme know whatcha guys think.
The is a picture from the front of the car facing the HAI. Notice that you can clearly see the air filter from this angle. Maybe simply dropping in a K&N rectangular filter would reap some good gains?

This is a picture of the lettering on top that says "POWER DUCT":

Re: Hot Air Intake on the G35
if this is what i think you are talking about, it's a Cold Air intake. Both the dealers i went to told me the exact same thing. And i was talking about it wit dyenguy and he knew there was a CAI in there too (unless he wasnt paying attention, j/k) but yeah, its a CAI. i could be wrong thou. thx for the pics

Re: Hot Air Intake on the G35
If it is a CAI I would be VERY surprised...I don't know many cars that come stock with a CAI. Also...there was an earlier post which said that the CAI costs like a couple of hundred $...why would someone be selling a CAI if there is already a CAI installed? I doubt it would be just to move the filter to a different place....

Re: Hot Air Intake on the G35
A Cold Air Intake is a "cone" filter that attaches to a 2.5" or 3" or whatever size alluminum pipe that runs from the intake manifold down past the motor and hides behind the front bumper to get the coldest air.
A Warm Air Intake is the same except that the pipe is shorter and stays within the engine compartment area. Ingen makes these and there are optional "heat sheilds" that block the heat from the engine around the cone filter.
One can argue that all it needs is an air filter strategically placed somewhere which will give it the coldest air, so it could be placed anywhere as long as it gets a true supply of cold air. However, the tube that directs the air must also be very smooth, non restrictive and not attract heat.....so if the filter gives cold air and the hose that directs air to the intake manifold does that then I guess you cold consider that a "cai"
In the end, I don't consider our stock setup and intake or CAI at least.

Re: Hot Air Intake on the G35
Hot Air Intake?
Wanna make -less- power?
The G35 used a 'sealed bay', effectively forcing the intake to suck air from outside the car... unless you drive in the Mohave desert.
Any aftermarket cone filter located in the bay will not be as effective as the stock unit. A filter relocated to the outside- fender, etc- will suck in cooler air, but the flow may be restricted.
I'd have to see dyno proof that a cone filter makes more power. In some cases, it'll cause a loss in torque. Until there is proof, the best bet is to use the stock intake and maybe a less restrictive filter.

A G35 owner used a Blitz intake and it seemed to help somewhat. However the Blitz exhaust hurt torque. A link to his dyno results are on below www.freshalloy.com thread.
As the previous poster said, you should be very wary of bolt-ons helping performance. I'd recommend you do a before/after dyno run, and just accept the cost as part of the upgrade.
