Remote Start - One Function Remote?

It seems like the idea of having a remote start module wired up to the factory key FOB is near impossible, so I guess I will have to make do with an aftermarket remote. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in getting a seperate alarm, nor do I really want a 4-button remote. I have been looking around on google and ebay and haven't been able to find many 1-button remote start kits.

In a perfect world I could have a remote start kit wired up to work with the factory remote and just work on a number of LOCK pulses or something. If anyone has any ideas, I am all ears.

I have a remote starter installed by dealer and it works with the factory key FOB. To start, I press the lock button 3 times (that can be changed to 2 times). I believe it's called Valet and you can read about it here: http://www.directed.com/security/valet/val_rs.asp

Good luck.

That is pretty much what I am looking for... now to find out if an installer locally can do it.

Not a chance.. I had a long talk about this with a few people and it would require swapping out most of the electronic boxes in the car, along with wiring harnesses. It could be done, yes, but not worth the money (might as well buy the newer year car).

I found a kit online for less than $60.
How much is it to install?

I could never understand how the remote start works on manual cars. What's its way around the clutch and the car being in gear?

I think it depends on the installer, but I can't imagine more than $200.00 installed with the price of the remote start. I am going to call around tomorrow and see what I can find. I don't like taking my car anywhere, so it's harder for me to decide.

Basically the remote start thinks the car is always in "park," which is why on all remote start kits they have a disclaimer that states 'for automatic cars only'; even though they work for both.

If you go remote start on a manual car, make sure it is not in gear.. ever.

on the clutch pedal there is a switch which can be bypass by either jumping those 2 wires permanently or add a wire so that the computer think the clutch is being pressed down but if the car is in gear when the remote start is on the car will start and moved forward and hit what ever is in front of it. but by putting another wire to the nuetral position switch the car will not start if it is in gear for safety reasons

See, I would have thought if the car is in gear, it would just stall out, or the handbrake would prevent it from moving. Either way, not pretty at all

The 6mts have a built in neutral safety switch that can be referenced for safe operation. Basically, when the tranny is in N the wire goes to ground, which can be monitored by the remote start. If the tranny is in ANY gear the wire floats open.

Keep in mind (and I hate to sound like a broken record) but a remote start that works off of an OEM remote will ONLY work within your OEM remote's range!

some of the newest remote starts for manuals require a few more steps..
Before you get out of your car after driving, you hit the start button on your remote, the car keeps running then when you take the key out, then you shut the door and it shuts off and is ready.. That way the car knows that it is in netural and ready to start..

Also, the car starter is very very strong and much stronger than the E Brake and the car will take off till it hits something if you start it in gear..

If you use the PNP switch (park neutral position) you don't need to worry about finding a remote start system designed for manual trannys. In fact, I would look for one that was intended for auto use only. By using this switch your car WILL NOT start unless it is N, unless there is a mechanical failure (which has the same chances that ANY alarm brain will freak out and start for no reason what so ever).

I do believe it all depends on which gear the car is left it. If the car is IN 1st gear the gear is small enough that the car will NOT stall out, as the clutch is already engaged. If you were to try this in 6th gear I doubt the car would move very much, as in 6th gear it would take quite a bit of torque (which requires air and fuel) to get the car moving... In reverse, you will definately have problems as well!

Good luck.

So did the dealer bend you over to have that installed?
