Has anyone actually hydrolocked a G35--

Would having a CAI this low be any different than having an intercooler

Do ya'll with CAI avoid rain-- or just puddles

If you have to run threw a good puddle could you do something to prevent the water from coming up.

I keep going back and forth and I absolotely can't make up my mind. I don't want to buy something I wont be happy with, and I don't want to run the risk of massively F'ing up my car.

 

It'll get locked if the filter is underwater...not if you splash through a puddle...

 

So I'd have to be still in a 6 inch puddle or something?

 

Why don't you buy that "future mod: supercharger" you had in your sig for like 6 months until everyone made fun of you about it? You shouldn't have to worry about hydrolock then.

 

go rent a pipe bender, drill a hole in your hood then make an intake that bends up threw your hood. Then the air will be cool and you cant hydrolock.

 

Didn't relize how involved it really was-- desided against FI for now. I'm not ready to drop that kind of money.

get the nismo cai w/ bypass valve and ur good to go!

 

How do you figure? Why is that the best choice?

Does it not come threw the bumper or something

i have a cai and ive ran through a few big puddles and nothing happeed u need to have ur whole bumper under water to hydrolock

 

the only way to hydrolock is to have the filter COMPLETELY submerged underwater. unless your driving through a flood, i doubt you will have problems. also you may want to consider getting the injen, which many people turn into a short ram during rainy seasons just to be safe...

 

I was talking to a guy I met the other day who told me his car hydrolocked with his injen intake. He told me that there was a puddle on the on-ramp of a freeway. He was in line to go up the onramp and he didnt realize there was a puddle until he was next in like (freeway traffic light). So since theres not much he can really do he decided to just floor it and go through the puddle quickly... but sure enough, his car hydrolocked. It took him about a day or so for the engine to dry out before he was able to drive again. Now the puddle was not like a small puddle, it was a pretty big puddle (so he says)... but I mean, how big can a puddle possibly be on a freeway on ramp? Not that big right? For his car to stutter over something like that is pretty risky to me. Lucky for him his engine survived it but I would not take that chance. You can either get the AEM or the Nismo intake, (theyre actually the same) but they both come with a bypass valve. I think injen might've created one too. It is a pretty rare case but I mean, 1 rare case can screw up your engine so why take the chance! Yes it does go to the bottom of the car like all other cold air intakes, the difference is just there is a bypass valve thats connected before the tube goes up to the TB. Research on bypass valves to see if it is for you. Most people just dont use it and have not had any issues what-so-ever.. no matter how big the puddle. So it's really up to you whether or not you wanna use it or not. It does hindure performance a little.. but whos going to notice? Definately not me.

 

That's right, jus add a Bypass to your CAI and your good to go. I'll post a pick soon of mine

 

You can always shorten the CAI during rainy days into a short ram.

 

Jtrain, if you're THAT worried about just don't get a CAI. Why drive around a car your all worried about? That's no fun. CAI are more show than go anyway.

 

I live in Vancouver and it's famous for raining 8 of 12 months here.. I use the K&N breathable waterproof cover thing and haven't ran into a problem.
