For those who had oil consumption issues, did it get better later on?

I bought my car new with 190 miles. Something in the back of my head told me not to get a car with that many miles, but I did it anyway.

Now at 2,500 miles, I've consumed almost 1qt. I don't think it's excessive, but my previous two cars were a G35 sedan and a FX35 and none of them consumed more than 1/8 of a qt (8k in G and 29k in FX35) with 5k mile oil change intervals. I followed Infiniti's break-in procedure, but who knows what happended in the first 190 miles. I also drive my coupe much harder (after breakin) than I did with the sedan and the FX.

So my question is... for those who had oil consumption issues in the beginning (less than 8k miles), did the oil consumption get much better as you racked more miles? I understand several have had the dealer replace the long block or the entire engine. I'm asking the ones that kept their engine past 15k-30k miles with the oil consumption issues.

I'm going to get my oil changed at the dealer this weekend with dino oil, and plan to mention it to the dealer. I'm not going to ask for a oil consumption test yet since it's not that bad. My guess is that the rings aren't properly seated.

So, here's my plan to seat the rings or whatever else for the next 2,500 miles. I figure since a lot of folks are saying the VQ takes upto 15k miles to completely breakin, I might still have a very slim chance. I plan to do this at least once every other day.
1) Warm up the engine completely (I don't have an oil temperature sensor, so that'll be about twenty minutes of highway driving)
2) From about 5 mph in 1st gear, floor it until I almost hit redline (~6.8k RPM) and completely let go of the accelerator. No brakes. Drive around regularly for about a minute or two.
3) Repeat step two (upto three to five times)
4) Check oil level every other day first thing in the morning and add additional oil as necessary.

I don't think I'm doing anything that's really bad for the car. I'll let you know if this improves the oil consumption issue.

I also saw this website and found it interesting. It's a bit late for me though.

I bought mine with 7 miles on it. After warming it up in the dealer lot, we went for a ride and I hit it hard right away letting the trans shift at redline. I bought it and on the 60 mile trip home did a few full throttle runs waiting 5 minutes between each. Drove it normally for most of the time during the 1000 mile breakin period, but always made a point to do a few WOT runs a day. Also, never let it stay at a constant RPM for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. On the freeway, manually shifted the AT down to get it up to 4-5K for a few minutes at a time.

At 2200 miles changed the oil to Mobil 1 5W/30 and thats all thats been in it since. Change every 7500 miles. Now it has 63K on it and is smooth as butter and uses about a qt. every 5K miles. Its not too late to break it in right. Just warm it up and let it cool down a few minutes between hard runs. Your oil consumption will decrease after the rings seat in better.

I'm hoping it's not too late. I thought it might have been the 190 miles since I broke in all three cars following Infiniti's recommendations. Oh well. Time will tell.

Ok. I've changed my mind. I'm not going to rev the hell out of the engine. I'm just going to drive it as I normally would and see if the oil consumption improves. We'll see.

To make a long story short . . . My G was almost 2 quarts low at the first 1600 miles. Four engine oil consumption test later and it was down to 1/4 pint low at the last 1000 mile interval reading. Whew! . . . I simply chalked it up to a thirsty break-in period.

Wow. That's a big turnaround. Thanks for sharing. I guess there's hope for my engine. It's such a let down to think I paid all this money for the engine to start burning up oil in the frist 3k miles.

Yes, it was quite a disappointment, to say the least. I couldn't truly enjoy my car with all of the questions floating around in my mind. However, I got through it, as will you. I trust that your G's thirst for engine oil is short lived. Good luck!

I have 25,000kms on my car and it is burning oil now. You can see the blue smoke coming out the tailpipe and smell it. Car has never burnt a drop of oil before and now it is doing this. Anyone have any additional information they can contribute. My car is a 2005 6MT.

Gasket where? Head gasket it would be burning coolant. With oil burning it has to be a ring gone bad or a valve seal. Headers aren't even on the car yet, just the test pipes. Is there a gasket I am not thinking about or have overlooked? Thanks.
