Wait! Don't you need a Dyno to fine tune the adjustments of Pulleys? Or am I mistaken?

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

Hey guys

I really wanna do this pulley mod. Actually already placed an order for a set at intense motorsports. I ma counting on some feedback from you guys on whether this is really gonna hurt the engine. I am not that worried about the warranty as we have pretty reliable powerplants.

Is that true that there are some adjustments needed. Logic tells me that they shouldn't. One thing that worries me is that the main crank pulley is made with a smaller diameter so that it underdrives. You guys don't hink this is gonna damage the rest of the components on the drivebelt (like alternator, water pump, a/c pump), as they are going to be spinning at a lower speed,

Are there any adjustments needed?

PLEASE HELP. I GOTTA DECIDE WHETHER TO KEEP THE ORDER. Am I better off spending the money on the Crawford plenum?

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

I installed a set on my 300zx back in 2000. Love them. It is one of the few ways to add HP with out adding more fuel or air. For that reason you will NOT lose the HP once the ECU realizes they are installed, unlike CAI. Without going into great detail, they make more HP by reducing the "work" required to spin the alternator, water pump and steering pump. Kind of like the effect you get when you turn on the AC, just opposite. IMHO it is better for the engine. Don't forget to buy the new belts too, your old ones will not fit. Let me know if you need to know where to buy them.

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

thanks a lot Zen

Just ordered them today from Intense MOtor Sports for 350 plus shipping (total 396 overnighted)

I am technically and scientifically inclined myself, and my logic tells me that there is just no way that it can hurt the engine.

I will report on my impressions as soon as I install them

Thanks

I like that site too. Good price by the way. Removing the crankshaft pulley requires a special tool. Go barrow it from Auto Zone, Kragen, or any auto parts store. Should be free to barrow or less than $5. Don’t forget to use a ruler to measure how tight the belts are. Basically, first measure the oval circumference of the belts. Then push one side of the belts as hard as possible and record how mush the belt is moving or stretching. I don’t know how to get the tool to measure the tension of the belts. If anyone is getting the dealer to do the work, please let me/us know how much you paid. Should be about $100.

THanks for the info. I am gonna see how much my mechanic will charge for putting them in. I knwo him well, so i think he won't charge me more than 50.

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

hey guys

I already poste this in th other pulley thread, but here it is again.

I got the whole set of 3 UA pulleys for my car but scared to put it on after talking to Daug at Crawford Z Service. He said that if the crank pulley is a single piece (which it is) he WOULD NOT put it on his car. This is because the OEM crank pulley is supposedly a two-piece with a dampener in between the two pieces. This is done so that at ~6000 rpm the pulley does not shake the crankshaft, which could obviusly lead to problems down the road. I am gonna go by the infiniti dealer to confirm the OEM construct, unless some of you more knowledgable/experienced brothers and sisters can shed light on the situation. If the OEM one is dampened and the UA one is not, I may NOT put it on.

What do you think?

Should not matter if it is properly installed. (See my post in the other pulley thread in this forum.) Just make sure it is properly torqued down.

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

Hey guys

Here is what I have to report: unfortunately not much. I called two dealers and neither of them have the crank pulley in stock. However, the parts guy (although he doesn't know much) said that they ARE one piece pulleys, and Scott of Intense Motorsports (from whom I got the pulleys) said that the two looked exactly identical and that there is a die-hard Z guy that works there (whoever he is) that did put them on his car.

So there is no way to tell FOR sure as to the contruct of the OEM pulley without taking them off the car. So, the ball is back in your court guys. Since I cannot do any mods until my original ECU comes back from Japan (see my ECU for Sedan thread in this forum) so that it can be dynoed before and after mods, it is up to you guys to try.

Can't wait to see some results. Pics would be helpful

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

Found out (according to Chris of Metro Infiniti in Monrovia, SoCal) that the factory pulley is in fact dampened (he checked with a mechanic). On the other hand, the Glendale Infiniti guy asked his mechanic and he said it is ONE PIECE.

Damn dealers, can never get any sense out of them. I am gonna ask Hazel, the parts guy at Glendale Inifiniti to order me one fr me just to look at. He will probably do it.

Unless one of you guys have already taken it out.

Will report back on what I find out.

Re: UNORTHODOX RACING PULLEYS, GOOD, OR BAD?

Checkout the picture. It looks like the stock crankshaft pully and harmonic dampener is a single piece.

Personally, I'm reluctant to run without the crankshaft's harmonic dampener for the small HP gain. I don't want to be the first guy that gernades his crankshaft/engine by running without it.

Some engines don't have harmonic dampeners. They're expensive compared to a pulley only. I'm sure Infiniti/Nissan would have left it off the VQ engine if they could have.
