Engine revving before going into reverse

Ok so I noticed today that when the car is cold and when shifting from park into reverse the engine revs up about 1,000RPM before dropping into gear. Just wondering if this is normal or not as the car is going up to the dealer sometime in the next couple weeks and I want to know if I should have them look at it. Thanks.

when the engine is cold, it should be above 1k rpms in park anyway. are you sure it's reving up? or is it just pausing during the gear shift? when the engine is cold and you are in reverse it will also be over 1k rpms. refer to the manual for a warning about cold starts and high rpms.

I know it's supposed to be over 1k when cold. My Explorer Sport is the same way. Yes it is revving up. Not only can I hear it, I can watch the tach move. No other car I've driven has done this. I may take a video of it doing this tomorrow when it's cold.

yeah i'd be interested to see that. i have an '06 sedan too and i dont' think i'm noticing this behavior, but i'll check again tonight when i leave work and again tomorrow morning and post back. i usually wait for the engine to warm up about 5 minutes but i'll drop it in reverse and see what happens.

This only happens if it's a cold start. It didn't do it at all once it had warmed up and did a warm/hot start. I'll see if I can get a video tomorrow morning.

Ok so it doesn't rev as high as I originally thought before shifting into gear. I just never paid attention to the needle. However, I still need to know if this is normal as I've never seen any other vehicle do this. Here is a link to the video:

When I left for work this morning, I paid attention to what you were trying to describe, and I did notice my tach going up by about 100rpms when shifting into reverse. But I did notice that it only happens when it's on a cold start. I don't think it's anything serious.

I think that's normal for a cold engine. No worries.

saw the video, my car does the exact same thing. i tested it out this morning. i thought you meant it jumped 1000 rpms. in the video, it looks like it might jump 100 or so. doesn't seem like a big deal, the other two cars i've driven also revved a bit when put in reverse, even when they were warm.

Ok thanks guys!!!! I usually don't drive away until the car settles to the 1000RPM mark but since it's my mom's car and I know how she drives and usually starts up and drives away I just wanted to make sure it's not a problem. Thanks again!!
