GTR Motor Swap
GTR Motor Swap
OK....
So it seems like you guys talk a lot of smack about gtr conversions... I'm pretty new here but.. A friend of mine has a couple r32 front clips coming in next month... and we want to try to pop it into my g35.
I have searched the forums for this info...but have not been able to find anything...
Does anyone have experience with this.. or know anyone that has done it already?
Please no flaming...I'm really serious about this... cause it would be so bad as* to have that engine in one of our cars....My Car..
Please let me know what you guys know about this or post any relative links.. all my experience is in subarus and honda's... I know its possible to put the engine in.. the question is.. is it practical at all.
thanks in advance

hmmm, not sure it would work unless you have a bottomless bank account. for one thing, the VQ is a heck of a lot shorter than a RB motor. it might be hard to fit that inline 6 into the already somewhat crammed engine bay. another thing is what tranny would u use and would it fit? and for the legal issues, it is not legal to put a motor in your car that is older than the year your car was manufactured. you say that you know it can be put in, is that a fact or a guess? i'm not flaming here, i really want to know. in any event, i hope you can put that thing in there, i've been waiting to see if anyone could put the legendary RB motor in a G35, good luck and keep us posted!
we are going to start the measuring of the engine bay and all that later this month... i would have to probably move the radiator in front of the front bumper support bar... i think it will fit that way... we are going to try it..
i say i know you can fit it in.. cause i know someone who put the sr20det motor into a datsun 510.. haha.. it was a beamer mechanic... im goign to try to do it as cost effective as i can.. would be doing all the work myself with some friends.
maybe hire someone to do the electronics if we cant figure that part out if its ultra insane... we will see....

well, from reading TONS of car mags every month...
i have seen an RB26DETT swapped into a 350z drifter, which was done by Top Secret... Top Secret also did the VK45 swap from the Q45 and then twin turbo'd it. i have also seen an SR20 swapped into a G35 by Signal Auto.
with the RB26 powered 350z drifer (cover of modified mag recently), i know the car was running a V-mount intercooler setup and a long-nose body kit... not sure if any modification to the front bumper or engine bay itself was required, but it looks like the RB fits in there no problem...

This project is doomed. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just taking a gamble and saying you fellas will run into way more problems than you are able to handle.
I think youll be able to pull it off if youve got the cash to do it right.
I have seen a few RB's stuffed into 350z's so why not a G?
My question for you is - what trans? What other mods would you do? Exterior?

yea, take a look at that top secret 350, notice something missing in the front, maybe a radiator support and bumper support. i'd hate to be in that thing in a front end collision, u'll have an RB26DETT transplanted right into your crotch. hey, its top secret, they rear mounted the tranny on the G35 GT-R. but hey, if you have the money and the will, you can put a jet engine on a G if u wanted to, they did it on an MR2!

I guess if you're looking for bragging rights along the lines of "I've got a GT-R motor", then that's one thing... ...but that's a lot of effort for just that. I understand doing it for a dedicated drift car or something, but for the street, you could build and turbo the VQ and be way ahead of the game in terms of cost and down-time.
Another benefit is that you'll be out having a blast instead of trying to address problems/headaches for a year or more.
What is your motivation? Just to say that you've got an RB26DETT in it? That's not going to mean jack unless you mod it for serious power. Why not just do so with the VQ from the start?

What's the motivation of modding any car? I say do what you want, if you like it more power to you. When working on something yourself and having the resources and knowledge to do it, go for it. The feeling is like no other when it's complete. Just be ready for some challenges and headaches in between. You're going to have a very unique car with the potential to put down a lot more power than a VQ without upraded internals. compare the RB with the 2JZ-GETT supra twin turbo engine, I think that would be awesome too.
sorry took so long
hey,
Thanks for the replys. Ive been crazy busy setting up a 180 gallon reef tank :-)...
Yeah as for of my main motivation.... THAT ENGINE IS JUST EFFING INCREDIBLE :-)... Iron Block strength...Inline6... you guys all know what it is..Eventualy the car might turn into a track car... but thats definitely not the goal at this point, it is a daily driver. I think the two main things are... i love the engine, and it would be great to accompolish it as a technical endeavor. Also the uniqueness factor.. There are many reasons...I would try to do it for minimum amount of money.. Im really trying to see whats possible... I havent started it yet.. there is going to be a front clip laying around.. so we are going to do a bunch of measuring and labeling... just to see if its worth the time and money.
we will see...

You would need a RB25 trans for rear drive only. The big problem is the amount of fabrication. You would basically have to refab the K member, radiator support, engine and tranny mounts, driveshaft, shift linkage, clutch slave mount and part of the firewall. Once the fab is done then do the wiring. Don't forget you can't use your stock gauges because they use the CAN BUS and the GTR ecu doesn't. Plus you lose your cruise, ABS, etc. It would be baddass but it would basically be a race car.

i duno about it being only a race car.
currently we are stuffing a SR into a FD..... :P
LS1 in a subaru / miata/ FD has been proven to be done well - and we're talking american elec in Japenese car.
I am the importer. we do alot of swaps...
personal car being a usa impreza converted to Right hand drive Sti-RA. brembos and everything, full AC and daily driver status.
we dont screw around. that having been said, a long nose conversion would be pondered, or tube steel front x support fabbed to replace the thermoplastic front end.
id be interested to see any engine bay shots (minus the engine) if any of you guys do your own work or motorswaps.
i know that a built VQ is good stuff. everyone knows that. the fundamental design of a V6 is also more ideal than an inline, but for the sheer delight and simplicty of running RB26det...... if you've ever driven one or heard one it is simply frekin lovely. ITBX6 is heaven
logic on trans:
i do have a spare rb25det trans lying around.
however, i do know that:
1. 350z 6mt will bolt onto a VG30DE/TT
2. VG30 (Z32) gearbox fits onto Rb26 - im assuming same as RB25 gearbox
-> therefore, G35 6mt will bolt onto RB26DETT.
