removing oil dipstick

At this point it is imperative to quickly reverse direction of the rotation and change hands holding the dipstick at the same time or slightly before saying a few curse words of your choosing. By now you will have successfully wiped most traces of the oil from the dipstick and any reading it provides will be useless. The final step is to pick up the vehicle and shake it firmly and listen for the sound of splashing oil within the engine and use the sound resonation to determine if you are a quart low. This method is equally effective as trying to use the dipstick on this car.

+1,000 on the crappy dipstick and yes, mine as well other motors do consume oil! Some more then others, some not at all. Mine is good for about 1QT every 2K or so.
I recently just figured out that if you pull the handle with your right hand, slowly pull the dip stick out and once you have it about half way out, use your other hand to help guide the stick as to avoid friction. Basically your right hand is pulling as far over to the drivers side of the car as possible but there is still friction with the passenger side or top most portion of teh dip stick hole. Your left hand can exert just enough force to allow the dip stick to come out smoother.
Still can never get a clean reading!

The best way that I've found is to take a reading when the engine is cold. When warm, the oil level is difficult or impossible to read. As the reference "high", take a reading right after an oil change using the proper amount of oil.
If you practice the technique, you can do the "right angle twist" technique to insert the stick without much difficulty. Just do it where there is good lighting so you can get it right the first time.
I remember seeing that someone painted the "funnel lip" where the stick goes in to so that it's easier to see. Looked like a good idea, and I've been meaning to do this myself.

engineers sometimes tend to overlook the engineering of a simple task thus making stupid designs quickly and with no regards as to how it will be used by the average joe or enthusiast and thus making things harder than really is necessary.... the oil dipstick and the engine cover has got to go...
