Ok sorry if this is a dumb question but my mom requested I post this and I did search and didn't come up with anything.

The dealer keeps insisting that the oil be changed every 3 months. My mom drives way less than the average of 12k a year and has always done oil changes ever 6 months if she didn't hit 3,000 miles on the oil. Is there any reason to not keep up the same OCI? I know that Infiniti says the G can go 7500 miles on oil but with the decently dusty conditions where the car is and considering how many in-town miles the car gets I thought it be best to run on the 3,750 OCI or 6 months whichever is first. Is this a bad idea? I'm under the impression that the dealer just wants to make more money by having the car in every 3 months where there will be maybe 1,000-1,500 miles on the oil. Thanks guys and again, sorry if this is a stupid question.

 

If you use regular oil then I would do it every 3k regardless of how many miles. If you use synthetic then you can go longer.

 

Dealers don't make much money [if any] on an oil change. Techs make too much, overhead, etc.

The reason they push it is that the car should be examined every 90 days for possible warranty work they can do to make money. After all you want to give them every opportunity to find things, right.

 

What kind of oil are you all running (NA setups)? Synthetic?

 

I run Mobil 1 5/30 in the winter and 10/30 in the summer.

 

Three months? 1500 miles? The techs there must be draining it out and putting it in their own cars.

Seriously, change it at 3750 or once a year.

 

I don't care what kind of oil it is, I woud never go a year. I just changed mine after 3 months ~4k with the oil pan spacer (6qts of Mobil 1 Syn) and it was still very dirty and needed it. Maybe the dusty, dry air out here in AZ is worse...
