Peformance Question
Re: Peformance Question
More like turn it off. The VDC is traction control in the "G". The supposed on/off switch is the button that says "VDC" to the right of your instrument panel lights control. Which is by your left leg.

Re: Peformance Question
gsedanman, I unhooked the battery a couple hours ago. I will let you know how it handles tomorrow. I hope this works. I'm glad to see that you liked the "in coupe clothing" motto. It's good to have the best of both worlds. How are you diggin' the coupe? I am truely jealous.

Re: Peformance Question
ryoken, I agree the tranny is disappointing. I've driven the Coupe A/T for a couple of days now and it seems improved over the Sedan's. Now that I'm used to it, I like the way the Coupe's A/T gear indicator 'follows' the tranny down as you slow, finally going into 1M when stopped. The shifting seems a little quicker and firmer and more 'predictable'.
I'd gladly pay more for a 'box' like that on the 3 but perhaps there's not enough that would.
Sedan was a great car but love my Coupe.

Re: Peformance Question
Dabearz454, If your car's running well and you drive fairly aggressively, then that's the style the tranny has learned. So probably you won't notice much or even any diff. by disconnecting the batt. If it were me tho, I'd give it a try. You might be surprised. I tend to granny a little sometimes to get the mileage, so I'm gonna try especially after breakin

Re: Peformance Question
Hooked the battery back up this morning and went for a drive. Guys, if any of you babied this car through break-in period, disconnect the battery for 12 hours and hook it back up. There is a big difference!!!!! This car now kicks serious A§§! Well worth is. Seems to shift quicker.

Re: Peformance Question
Hey mbarrad, Sounds like disconnecting really worked well just like the tech told me.GREAT. What I don't know is how often that might need doing and he didn't know either. I guess whenever the car feels a bit sluggish.
Any other issues with diconnecting overnight (besides the radio presets)?
Enjoy the ride man. Post with more details when you can....

Re: Peformance Question
gsedanman, just the radio presets and seat memory. The garage door opener and compass did not need reseting. Again, I would recommend this to anyone having performance issues. My wife is starting to drive the G more often, so I should not have unhook the battery again. She has a heavier foot than me. Haven't told her about the VDC button as I worry about her in the rain with this car. Thanks gsedanman for the great advice.

Re: Peformance Question
Makes you wonder why the Japanese did it this way. Was it money, or something else? I think it's a good example of too much automation- and trying to please too many ppl at once.
Hopefully they're listening and eventually there will be a simple but very useful switch for the driver to choose his 'mode' easily.

Re: Peformance Question
Hey mbarrad, It's been a couple days since your 'disconnect'..
any issues, still happy, still fast, ?????? There's very little info on the subject (hardcopy anyway) , just anecdotal stuff.
Seems Nissan's being very tight lipped about it: Someone on the Forum was going to contact Nissan to fnd out more, but nothing yet. So all we've got is trial and error. If you can record resetting dates etc. , perhaps gas mileage, maybe seat of the pants impressions- stuff like that , then we can compile something on the subject.
There's been a lot said on this issue at times and a lot of complaints of poor performance. Nothing is forthcoming from Nissan, so it looks like we'll have to figure it out ourselves.(carefully).
The thing I'm wondering lately is that there's been complaints of the H/P not matching up to 'expected' H/P. When the guys get a Dyno done and figure in drive-line loss and all that, the numbers are low. Is it because the ECM's could be in GRANNY MODE, and just need to be 'reset'. Food for thought I think. In the dyno testing I've seen (on the internet) , there's been no mention of resetting the computers, Disconnecting the battery, or anything like that.
Sure would be interesting to get to the bottom of this one, right? My guess is that there's some FREE H/P that's hiding under the hood, and all we need to do is find the whip.................

Re: Peformance Question
Anybody know if there's a difference in performance/shift patterns between "D" and "5"? (I mean, put it in manual-5, and leave it there.) I'm hoping that on the manual side, it ditches the adaptive pattern and acts a little sportier. I can't try it out yet, as I'm only 370mi into my G35, and have a ways to go before the break-in is done.

Re: Peformance Question
Hey ryoken, The diff that I am aware of is that if you leave the selector in '5M' then you must remember to shift down when you 'floor it' ----you don't get a kick-down as you do in 'D'.
There's some talk of "Firmer shifts" in manual mode and that could be. I didn't notice that on my Sedan. I thought it was the same firmness in both choices. That would have made a lot of sense to have the sportier mode engaged when the 'M' mode is selected. I personally would like a rocker switch to choose SPORT/CRUISE so that it could be engaged in both 'M' and 'D' modes. Here again some fellas timed their
0-60 runs and felt the car was quicker in Automatic mode. The computer does at least do a good job of shifting at optimum revs in the AUTO mode. 'Ya takes yer chances' in manual to not hit the rev limiter, tho..
It seems the best we can do for now (for sure) is reset the computer periodically, once a month- whatever, by disconnecting the batt. until we either learn more about it or Nissan makes this info. more available............
Keep in touch with what you learn.........Later.........

Re: Peformance Question
how similar is this whole computer-learning thing to other cars out in the market? seems like if you had enough time on your hands and access to a drag strip or race track, you can "teach" your car to perform a certain way. typical city driving won't allow that just cuz of all the unpredictable situations. it definitely would've been easier if nissan would've included a switch that would turn off the computer and put it in total manual mode. it would be cool if there were switches for memory modes.. kinda like the memory seats, to conform to the driving styles of the various different ppl driving the car (if you have more than one driving in the first place..) but it's probably way too early to see something like that developed.

Re: Peformance Question
Hey KongzGx, Haven't driven the other cars with 'tiptronic' type trannies such as Bimmer, but apparantly ours don't hold a candle to them. In our favour is:1- that it's not that big a deal and:2- car prices. (besides looks, performance, popularity, and a ton of other goodies)
:P) You don't have to go to the strip even - Just find a far away smooth, dessolate road and whip the G a few times up to maybe 70 or 80 MPH. The problem is when your done 'retraining' the car and drive back home it's already learning to 'granny' again..........Then the process starts over again. B4 long she needs 'whipping' again!!!!!!!!!
Man what a mistake by Nissan. They sure missed the boat for the sake of a simple switch.
That switch is at the top of my wish list. Hopefully soon someone soon will retro-fit it at a reasonable cost. Hell maybe even Nissan could come up with something. Sure would make a lot of guys happy..
NISSAN ARE YOU LISTENING?????????????????
Maybe it is a big deal................................
