Re: Peformance Question

it's a pretty big deal, i think.. we bought this car for it's performance, among other things.. and at the time u want it to perform, it doesn't show much more result than a camry or honda cuz the computer was "trained" that way? it sux.. the engine in this car is awesome.. i think it's gonna go to waste in many ppl's G's..

I think we should all 'hound' Nissan/Infiniti for a solution. I guess customer service dept. would be a good place to start.......Canada:>>>>>>>.1-800-387-0122.............

Re: Peformance Question

The G is running on all cylinders now. Shifting in automatic mode seems shorter and crisper(below 3000 RPM). Before (with VDC on) on wet streets, the wheels never broke loose. Now it is almost dangerous, but fun!!! The wheels broke loose on me yesterday about 40mph, and my a§§ end started to drift left into on comming traffic. Respect for this car was earned.

I too believe that there are hidden ponies in the G, and where I suspect it is in the ECU mapping. I have been riding bikes all my life and for fuel injected systems, we use what is called a Power Commander. Essentially this device re-adjusts the factory fuel map in the ECU to squeeze out the hidden horses. Also added a timing advance mod chip to increase engine response (by far the cheapest and most noticable addition).

I will keep you posted on power issues with the new and improved G.....

Re: Peformance Question

Great news, man! I think we're onto something here.
You mentioned timing. Well I hooked my timing light up to my Sedan (last summer) as explained in the Service Manual to discover that timing can be checked just as with other cars. What I don't know yet is how to adjust it. Perhaps like you said- by mapping (or flashing) thru the ECU. I believe that the timing can be 'optimized' or at least 'should' be optimized to take full advantage of Premium fuel. What I'm not sure of is this: We know that the ECU retards Ignition tmg.if it detects lower octane fuel but does the ECU also optimize tmg. if you use say Super Premium or better? By seat of the pants feeling, some posters have said they do notice an improvement in performance which leads one to believe the timing increases. Also I remember 'Copperhead' on F/A saying that he saw a dyno of a Z using I think it was 100 octane fuel with good results- (something like 2-3 H/P more if memory serves... I know there's something in there.Just a matter of finding how and what.
20 years ago I had a nice bike: an '83 GS1100-E Suzuki. All carburetted and no computers, but in it's day was reckonned to be the best and fastest. I think it was PEE WEE GLEASON who used to test all the bikes of that era (because he was small) that got the 'E' to cover the quarter in 10.9 seconds (stock) -- 0-60 in something like 3.9 seconds. I guess by todays standards it's a dinosaur but in its day what a machine. I survived about 10 yrs of biking, thankfully, and gave it up as a deal with my son b4 either one of us died. But those were fun days...........................Later.......

** an '83 GS1100-E Suzuki. All carburetted and no computers, but in it's day was reckonned to be the best and fastest. **

Have to disagree with you on that one.. The KZ1000 ELR (Eddie Lawson Replica) with the factory Kerker system was supposed to be the fastest. Wish I could get my hands on one of those. They made them only in '82 and '83. Biking affords the freedom and feeling that you just can't get in a car. I will have another one one day. Bikes back then were indeed dinos, but were a hell of alot easier and cheaper to work on. When you get into different exhaust systems, ECU modules, fuel injection and todays electronics, it can get pretty intense. Tools are also expensive.

As for the timing advance. There are some timing advance kits for sale on ebay for the G. Anyone ever try one out? One other thing I did to my bikes to gain more power was remove the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve and install block-off plates where is used to be. Could this be done on a car? Did not have to worry about emissions with a bike too much since they burned pretty clean. As for the ECU fuel mapping device. I will scour the net to look for anything for the Gc and Gs. K&N made the Power Commander, I will start there. I'll let you know what I find.

Re: Peformance Question

Cheers Mike, When I said fastest perhaps I meant Quickest; I seems to remember something about the Eddie Lawson Replica and how fast it was. Coincidentally I've still got all the bike and car mags I bought back then --------Hundreds----- I'll try and find a comparo when I have time. (bench racing fun isn't it?).. I might concede the top speed to 'Eddie', but 'Pee Wee gets the 0-60, and Quarter mile. Comments??

As for the timing Advance kits on ebay: If they're the same as the guys on here and F/A were discussing some time ago the concensus was SNAKE-OIL.(at that time) Might do to Search for info on the topic and anything new. I will too.
I hear you on the "easier and cheaper back then" statement.
Same with our cars, eh. Can't spend an afternoon cleaning the plugs, adj. the timing, rejetting the carb, and generally tinkering------Now you need a scan tool (Consult II) to get anything done very easily other than the very basic of maintenance.
Quite a challenge to come up with anything worthwhile.
I haven't seen your T/B Sedan (that I can remember). Is it posted? I like that colour.
When I fugure out how , I'll post my Coupe too......

Re: Peformance Question

Aw Jeez..Now I am going to have to whip out the Digital Camera, clean up the G and get som pics added to the board. Where can I get a Consult II for the G, and is this a diagnostic tool that will spit out maintenance codes? Is it expensive? The only Engine Management System I could find for the G was by HKS. Still too early for aftermarket performance electronics for our cars IMO.

As for Bike stuff, I actually think that Pee Wee would take Eddie out in a drag race, but Eddie would eat him alive on the track. I would love to get ahold of some of those old bike mags. Those were some pretty fierce competitions between Kawasaki and Honda. Eddie Lawson really set Kawasaki on a rocket ride to sucess when he started beating Honda with the green monster.

Re: Peformance Question

as far as i can tell, G35's transmission will not upshift in manual mode. I drove an auto sedan and it would be bouncing if the rev-limiter forever without shifting from 1 to 2, or 2 to 3. Same as BMW.

OTOH, G35 manumatic mode sucks(IMHO) because it is soooo slow to react to your input. It take forever for the car to actually shift the gear after you tell it to.

Either way, the 6MT is great!!!

Re: Peformance Question

I know the answer to this has been posted many times before (cause I had to give it once) but what happens is this. Whatever gear you select in manumatic will be the gear it will switch up to....if in 2nd 1-2, if in 3rd 1-2-3, if in 4th 1-2-3-4...etc. Whatever gear you choose it will treat it like an automatic up to that gear. If you pulled it down to 2nd and left it there it will not shift up to third...you must do it yourself.

Re: Peformance Question

EdRedS, I heard you guys are back in a 'deep freeze' again. Sympathies, man. It really bothers me to have big changes so quickly.--- How does the G handle such cold temps? Still start good? Gas mileage even worse? Oil seem thin enough for that temp? Engine warm up OK? Give it a 'shot' of gas line antifreeze at every fillup? ... Only been -14 to -15 around here in southern Ontario (so far) UGH.
In your answer to 'genna' about the tranny maintaining the last setting you selected (in Manumatic). That's true in the Sedan but I found out the hard way that the Coupe is different:...It's indicated selection of say 3 falls to 1 as the tranny gears down, so that when you stop, the indicated gear is 1. I found out the hard way (becuz I didn't read the manual) one day when driving my Coupe in town in 3 like I used to with the Sedan. Everything was cool until my first stop at a light. When I took off again I didn't know the tranny would stay in 1, consequently I almost redlined it, luckily not racing or anything like that so it didn't hit the limiter....but almost ......and only about 10 or 20 kliks on the car. I almost 'Soiled' my pants.
Pays to read the manual b4 driving...and not assume one car is the same as the other! Lesson well learned..
Let's see -Jan 15th---that makes it about 9 weeks to spring.(not so long if you say it fast, LOL)............ Later............

Re: Peformance Question

Hey dude, No rush on the pics. I haven't figured out to post to the site yet. I understand it's not that tough, but the car's kinda dirty, and washing, cleaning, polishing, and Freezing my buns off just to get pics 'ain't gonna happen'. I feel like a 'road trip' to Fla. , and taking some nice beach shots. Could post from the shade somewhere, sipping a Pena Colada
admiring how good the Coupe looks in the Fla. sun....(and all the beach bunnies swarming around the car) ............. PHEW- sorry , got carried away......LOL

A 'Consult 11' at you local neighbourhood Nissan dealer would probably run you about $6G's ( from what I've heard).....Too expensive for my budget.
Aftermarket performance electronics for the G with probably show up in the spring with all the NISMO goodies hopefully. Although I've heard recently that it's going to be late spring to summer now!!!!!!!!
I never did appreciate 'track' times too much back then in the 70's and 80's becuz we were into drag racing, not track racing. Didn't care about handling like I do now, All I wanted was the fastest 0-60 and 1/4 mile.
Yeh Eddie Lawson was a legend on the track, and could probably have beaten anyone just driving a moped, LOL..., let alone an EL-special, hahahaha.
Like I said, I'll dig out the bike mags sometime, and see what I've got. If there's anything that interests you , you're welcome to it. I'm gonna have a major 'turnout' hopefully this summer to sell my house. My gal Sue and me will finally be an 'item' this year. (wonder if she'd like the idea of getting married in a G!) Now that would be a first.
A beautiful event befitting such a beautiful car............or is it A beautiful car befitting such a beautiful event? Hmmmmm

Re: Peformance Question

Congrats to Sue and you! I think the marriage in the G would be cool. Maybe you could sell the idea and to Nissan/Infinity for a commercial? Awesome!...6Gs for a multimeter!!!! I'll just pay for the services thank you. I've heard alot of talk about NISMO coming to the states and being warrantied by Nissan, but fail to see anything official on Nissan News. I will believe it when I see it. My dealer has already expressed that they will not sell or support NISMO or any performance parts. What tight wads. I need an official release so I can make them eat it.

Sorry to hear it is so cold in the Great White North. Here in Texas, it is freezing at 62. Brrrrrrr! We are supposed to get an Arctic cold front tomorrow which will drop temperatures into the lower 40s. How will I survive?

Hey, I appreciate the offer on the bike mags. Take your time getting settled in. Take pics of the wedding and post some if you want. Again congrats.
