Double Clutching
I've read here and there on a little about double clutching. I don't really know what it is. I have a some questions hopefully you guys can answer.
1. What is it? How do you do it?
2. What purpose does it serve?
3. Does it harm the engine in anyway?
Thanks guys =D

Re: Double Clutching
1.) Double-clutching is now a thing of the past...no purpose to it. Take a regular downshift for example: push the clutch in, shift from 3rd to 2nd and blip the throttle, then let the clutch back out. Double-clutching is this: Push the clutch in, shift from 3rd to Neutral, let the clutch out, blip the throttle, push the clutch in, shift to 2nd and let the clutch out. Basically, instead of going from 3rd to 2nd, you go from 3rd to neutral and then blip the throttle and then go to 2nd.
2.) Basically serves no purpose anymore. In old cars, you used to HAVE to double-clutch in order to downshift, but thanks to nice new synchros, you don't have to deal with that anymore. The only time I would double-clutch in my G is if I wanted to shift to 1st...there is something about 1st, it's just too tough to get it in gear if you don't double-clutch while you're moving like 10+ mph.
3.) Double-clutching does not harm the engine at all. In fact, it's better for the transmission than normal down-shifting. But like I said before, double-clutching is not necessary anymore, it's a thing of the past, and if you still do it, you're just wasting time (unless you wanna go to 1st when traveling over like 8 or 10mph).

Re: Double Clutching
MrElussive is right.
A more efficient way of double clutching (and also what MrElussuve described) is called rev-matching.
When you down shift from a higher gear to a lower one (say 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd), what happens is you create an excessive wear on the clutch due to a jump into higher RPM on the engine's behalf in order to catch-up with the revolution speed of the clutch disk. Rev-matching allows you to downshift while conserving the life of the clutch. To rev-match: depress the clutch, down shift, blip the throttle, and release the clutch. When you do that, you bring up the RPMs of the engine (or the flywheel if you wish), to match the revolution speed of the clutch disk - thus creating less tear while the two disks re-engage.
I hope this makes sense....

Re: Double Clutching
Actually despite wear on the clutch, double clutching (rev matching) serves a very important purpose. It maintains balance of the car. If you just downshift and let the syncros do the work the car lurches from the sudden rev match, do that at high speed in a corner and your toast. Rev match properly and the balance doesnt shift so you maintain complete balance and can accelerate/brake under control.

Re: Double Clutching
Double clutching was done with non-synchronous transmissions and it was necessary to rev-match the trans/engine before the shift could actually be mad without grinding. Some commercial applications still use it but not cars. A simple blip of the throttle and expereince is all that is required for "rev-matching".

Re: Double Clutching
GMan6, I agree with you on that, but if you rev-match correctly within 100rpm's, clutch engagement will be smooth and it won't mess up the balance. Plus the fact that you're not supposed to shift during a turn...you do whatever shifting necessary before (usually a downshift or two) and after the turn (usually an upshift), never during!

Re: Double Clutching
if u clutch 2 times on the same gear and ur car launches for a bit, wat is that called?
i thot that was double clutching.

Haha, I bet the original poster just heard that from the Fast and Furious. Oh well, its ok. Whenever I hear someone say double clutching, I think of an old 13 speed dumptruck!
