Anyone know if florida is using the e85 crap yet? Is this stuf nationwide already?

 

Or has ethenol been increased in the fuel.

To run E85 u have to be a FFV (flex fuel vehicle).

Ethanol has less energy per volume than traditional gasoline - you need to burn more to achieve the same power as normal gas. E85 is a corrosive solvent. Fuel storage tanks and dispensing equipment must be corrosion and damage resistant. Fuel pumps and hoses must also be made of non-corroding materials, and stainless steel is used for fuel tanks. Extra care is required in keeping storage tanks and delivery hoses clean and free of sediment that could be washed into a vehicle's fuel tank and cause problems.

 

my wifes altima with a VQ recently started knocking. It is a 0 mod car so I am trying to qualify or disqualify fuel or fuleadditives as the source of the problem.

The knock does not seem to occur if get on the car rather it seems to occur under light load or light acceleration. Does not knock at idle or if you rev it out of gear.

I am going to take some readings on the MAF now. I checked the price on it last night and nearly rolled out of my chair. The maf is more than my car payment WTF up wit that shew weee.

This should answer a lot of your questions. Its long and kinda hard to understand but from what I picked up from it. Any car can run post 1988 can run at least 20% ethenol. and I know for a fact that there is 10% Ethanol today in our gas.

As far as E85 I think any car can run off of it but the problem you will run into is that your F/A ratio will get messed up because E85 is a 110 octane which should tech. add HP but I believe in the link provided they were talking about BTU and I think E85 has less BTU in it so therefore you lose Torq. To solve this F/A ratio problem you can go to the dealership and get a new computer and it should take care of this.

 

So far, very few of the stations around my area have switched to the ethanol. I'm still bracing myself for lower mpg/tank b/c my miles are crappy as is

 

okay I knew I would find this....... I sall a news story on it an they said just about any car can convert to E85 thats why its so promising bc with hybrids you have to buy a new car with E85 you can convert your car to run off it. Like I said before I beleive you will still need a new computer to adjust F/A ratio. but here is what I found again.

Holy cow so you ca make the stuff huh. Jeez that would be cool. I bet fuel coops would pop up all over the country if the cars were more capable of running it wouthout mod.

All E85 basically is ..........Moonshine with a little gas mixed in it. I believe some people in the mid west make it on there own already for about 70 cents a gallon. Not to shaby IMO this is what I heard on the news.

Noah, try some 93 octane fuel and see if the knocking goes away. You may have some carbon build up that increased the compression and increased detonation, which higher octane should help.
