Putting a TH400 in my car...

well, i have decided now to skip all the crap and just get rid of the clutch altogether. i have the adapter, ordered the tranny and have the new flexplate coming, all i have to do is get the driveshaft made as soon as i get it in.

it will be a fully built Turbo Hydramtic 400 transmission, manual reverse pattern valve body, with a 3500-3800 stall in it, GRRR GRRR GRRRRRR (best tim allan voice)

hopefully i wont have any problems... should have the tranny by next friday and in my car the next week. i am dropping off the car tues or wed for the 8 point cage to be put in. just for Dan, F*CK the f*cking bull****!!!!

I like the way you think. I always loved that trans. What about a trans brake?

I have a question for you? If I remember right, the turbo 400 needed 15-20 hp more than the turbo 350, and the 350 weight is less. Is that still the rule today? Think about a trans brake, 3 tenths easy if you hook up.

i have a 1200hp capable, 3500 stall, transbrake , with reverse manual VB now...

finally talked to the guy tonight and am ordering it monday, the difference in the TH350 and TH400 is this. the 350 was made to mount up to GM smallblocks. and the 400 for the big blocks, the 350 is smaller and has smaller parts like the shafts and other components. yes it is lighter but not as strong. i am trying to replace everything with bulletproof parts so the car wont be down very long...

Your on the right track, 1200hp? yep, the 400 is the way to go.
Just so you know! the small block and big block chevys share the same trans mount/ bolt setup. In many cases today many guys are running the 2 speed power glide and are running better ets with them. I hope you understand that I do not know what "all your trying to do. I do love what your doing. love the way you think. Never had problems with a TH400, The stall converters sure can make a mess if you damage one.

Damn! Go on an finish it. Get one of those 572 Big Block crate motors that Foose puts in his rods. Then a 9" Ford rear.

I have no bloody clue what any of this means except for the fact that is it all in the need for speed.

Question - will this make your Z no longer a daily driver?

Is this kind of tranny good for autocrossing?

I'm not gonna get one myself, but I'm damn curious to know what this all means.

He is building the Z to go very fast in a straight line. The stall speed of the converter would be a little high to use in daily driving.

i am keeping so its possible to drive on the street, will be a little difficult with the higher stall but people do it everyday.

it will be a straight line car, after having this much power, thats all i planned on doing. its already hard enough to find the adapter plate for the th400. after talking with vinny, he is helping me get my hands on adapter, flex plate and tranny mount that he personally runs on his 8.3 second "street" car!!

this will be fun for sure, i am thinking probably about little more than two weeks till i can drive it again..

i have to get someone to weld me straps on the bottom of my fuel cell when i cut the hole in the spare trunk well. then i just have the cage to be put in and a "firewall" built over the cell. again easy stuff for a welder...

i will have LOTS of pics here soon!!

thanks man, i come from a strict import drag background since around '94, this is my first american part for sure!!! i just knew that the th350s were smaller housing and smaller parts inside, like the shafts etc.... i figured they mounted the same but wasnt 100% cause i know a guy in colorodo that has a th350 on his Z, he used the overpriced adapter from the xtreme guys...

i figured i would get stuff well over my power range, my fuel pump is good to 1300 FI hp, tranny good to 1200hp and 1100 ft pounds, now i need to do something about the axles, i am thinking a four link with a ford 8.8 but i dont know if i want to pretty much back half it right now...
