detector help

well ive got a passport x50b thats worked great for me. a couple months ago it started giving me a "service required" message occasionally. turning it on and off once or twice usually did the trick. now it seems that all it says is "service required". doing some research shows that it means the self calibration failed. ive been using a cord from www.invisicord.com for a few months now and im starting to think it may be getting power surges because of it. its been 2 years since i bought it so the warranty is up. any advice short of buying a new detector?

Valentine 1. The only way to go. I have one in my Prius for when I get the car up to 50mph and stuff.

I took the plunge and bought a BelPro RX75 http://www.beltronicspro.com/rx75.html
it was pricey but we had gotten used to the Escort SRX in one of our other cars and this is about the same and I got it for about 1k installed.

TRy going back to the cord that came with it. If that does not fix it you can send it back they will referb it for you. I think it is only like 50 bucks.

If it's going to be $50 for it, just sell it or throw it away and get something newer/.

I'm thinking of going with that RX75 too. Any personal reviews on it? Can't decide if I want to spend near 1K for that Pro setup, or get something else....

If you were running that without a fuse. Hopefully not, but most likely that detector is toast. Sorry...

Now that his thread is turning into a best radar detector thread, you have to ask yourself. "What is my opportunity cost?" If you dont have $300 to blow on a ballzout Vallentine Radar Detector. Then you may want to consider a Belltronics (Bell) 935 Express or similar. It has the same Brain as the big daddy, just not all the bells and whistles. I bought mine for $85 and could not be happier.

It's the best price for performance Radar Detector on the planet.

I dont feel that you gain much more performance over paying $100 on a Radar Detector. Ku-band is not here, and prob wont be for a long time. All the other bands, Laser, Ka, K, X have been around for a thousand years. Its the same old technology cops use. Therefore, the technology has not had to change that much to counter it.

Sure its cool to have a RD remember certain bad areas, with GPS and all that stuff. But anyone with a little common sense can do that in their head.

One of the Bell Express models will take care of you. Be warey of Ebay. Might want to mount that bad boy up and out of direct sunlight to. Good luck.

BEL has a rebate on some of their detectors if you buy one direct from BEL. You buy a unit and send in any detector - working or not - and they'll give you a refund on your credit card. I've done it twice.
