And it's not like I just sent him the money and that was it. We exchanged about 20 pm's before making the deal, and he came off as a solid, nice guy.

I would've never gone through with the purchase if I did not think I was protected.
I am just saying that I've dealt with lots and lots of people before online and never got scammed. His original post was a little scarce and the price low. That made me doubt it for some reason. The 2nd big giveaway was his post count of 30 and 0 iTrader...

If I was going to do business with him I would've asked him for 20 points of ID and maybe done some sort of COD deal. If he didn't like it well too bad.

I hope you get the cash back from the CC company...otheriwse it's live and learn...how to humiliate people online that is hahaha. Let's hope we get his Face Book etc.

I have been buying and selling on forums for about 10 years myself so I am no rookie at this either, and this is the first time I have ever been ripped off. Bottom line is, there really isn't a full proof way to go about buying things this way other than protecting yourself with paypal and your credit card. You have to put your trust in the seller, but there are things that can make it easier to trust them like you said.

I don't see how 20 forms of ID would have done anything. The cops will not do anything regardless so no matter how many forms of ID I had of the guy all I can do is get my money back from Paypal.

True, but you can do a few things to limit your risk here and there.

The forms of ID are there so you can take a bat to their head later if they scam you

I also try to stay local and meet in person unless absolutely necessary. Let's face it, you can get away with whatever you want online and that's becoming very attractive especially in this economy.

short of meeting everyone you buy with face to face and inspecting the item prior to exchanging cash, theres no foolproof method for protecting against scam. and half the reason we have forums is to connect us with people who dont live near us. dont like 1% of the scammers out there ruin it for everyone else.
