Question about aftermarket rims
I see a bunch of you going to custom rims and was wondering about the balancing of them. I have limited experience with aftermarket rims, but none of my experiences were good, when it came to balancing them. Always had a shimmy in the steering wheel. And I hate that!
I tried it all too, the plastic hub rings, special wheel nuts and all, with no luck. Even found a guy who could balance them while they were on the car. And that was expensive and time consuming!
I know they weren't real good quality rims (can't remember brands) but do you need to spend a bunch to achieve a good balance without that wheel shimmy? Any recommendations on brands that you have had good experience with? (meaning no steering wheel shimmy)
I'm also thinking of going from the factory 17", to an 18" wheel and tire setup. Any issues I need to be aware of?
As always, thanks for your input.

This is easy... Cheap rims are cheap for a reason. They're cast (often times made in China) the processes they use to make the wheels allow for loose tolerances and they are not made to OEM specs.
If you buy Volks, PIAA's, Miado, Maya, etc... and pay about $3K plus for a set of rims and tires you should not have this problem. I know people with all types of aftermarket rims here in CFL and I don't know of one person with any problems like you mentioned. Then again, I bought a set of rims from Wheel Max for my accord ($1300 for rims and tires) and they were junk!!!
Sometimes the old addage... you get what you pay for... is true.
Either go through Creative Carz in SFL (ask for Dexter) or go to Racing Zone in Orlando (ask for Doug). Both of these places give discounts to the FGC members. Dexter has insane prices and Doug will hook you up with free mounting, balancing, install, etc... BTW, I'm 100% sure that Racing Zone has the BEST POSSIBLE balancing machine and the BEST POSSIBLE plastic tools to install your tires on your rims w/o scratching them up.
Good luck!
