How much modding is enough?

The question in the members section got me thinking about my modding. I started an excel spreadsheet of all my mods. I have spent ~$13,100 and many of these parts were used.

I have also tallied up what I can make if I were to part the car out now. My total loss as of right now would be ~$4000 (but that doesnt include the labor of taking this stuff off which I imagine would be another $1000-$1500.

So....If I decided to part her out now...I would take a ~$5000 hit. I guess its not too bad considering I'll have a bad *** customized G with 385hp (may go up next week ) or at least thats what I'll tell myself.

How much is enough???????

Ok...updated with stuff I forgot like TS Reflash, KP and Tint stuff....

Up to ~$14,700 spent

And ~$4,700 lost (~$6,000 after de-install)

Is happiness worth $6K.....I think so! <-- assuming the Vortech doesn't kill my engine and/or tranny at which case my happiness will be re-evaluated.

Why would you go and do that?

So....If I decided to part her out now...
And really... why would you want to do that?

I think you should go take your car for a spin, it should make you feel better.

who cares?? you only live once, so you might have had some more money in the bank, big deal. i try not to think about the logical side of everything. if you were thinking logically you probably would have bought a toyota prius. just enjoy your car!!!

I'm intentionally not caluclating the amount I've spent on my car. This way if the wife asks me I can HONESTLY say I don't know. I can tell you for darn sure that it's more than the number Jason posted. Now... I just need a new bumper.

Also, there are mods I've purchased like z-tube/popcharger/K&N/RTcats... but got rid of for next to nothing. Would I have to add those prices into the amount too even though they're not on the car?

Final thought of the day... don't overtighten your tensioner pulley bolt when tightening your S/C belt or you'll snap off the head of the bolt. Don't ask how I know.

That really puts everything in its proper perspective, doesn't it.

I try not to worry about things that I've already done.

If I totalled everything up then I would be put on suicide watch. It's all about perspective. I view my car and motorcycles as my hobby and money spent on them is the same as money that I would spend going to Vegas, Bahamas, etc. It just happens that I'm buying tangible things. I'll put things in financial terms when I work, finance the house, buy rental properties and the like. Jason, how many times has the car made you smile from ear to ear and how many good friends have you made through this "hobby". I bet if you think about it this way then 6k or whatever you think your net loss will be is well worth it. Between parts and labor I surpassed the 40k mark a couple months ago and that was before the car went in the shop again. Anytime you are feeling bad just give me a call and I can tell you my stories!!!! Isn't it wonderful to be in your late 20's-early 30's, unmarried and no kids. Woops, sorry Neff. LOL!

I will be the first one to admit I don't like heavy mods. Not because I don't enjoy them, but because it's a hassle for people such as myself (5 cars in 4 years and counting). Even though I LOVE each and every one of your cars (Todd, the Jasons, Alan, Jorge..), I could never catch the FI bug from you guys, nor did I have much choice being an '05 owner.

And I like to get ideas from people, but I don't really get jealous of what mods x, y and z person has. So I'm pretty good at setting my own limits as far as what I want and can afford. I'll have 4-5 grand into my car by the time I'm done with it, and out of that $0 will be spent on go-fast mods. I got my go-fast mod already

I try to shoot for only used parts that are under $500 bucks and to keep everything function over form. Thats my modding rule and it helps me to keep me away from those fancy wheels/tires, lowering kits, camber adjustments kits, supercharger/turbocharger kits, body kits, etc. I'll just live vicariously though people who have these mods and hop in their car for a ride

I try not to add mod parts up in total because that would just upset me and leave me crying in the night...

If you only knew of the joys you were missing out on Alan. The fun times I've had with my 2 little girls as we wrestle, play soccer, 'Sorry' or Dr. Rabbit Fur Head, sit on the couch and watch Disney Movies while eating popcorn, playing at car meets, etc... and to have a wife that allows me to mod away as I have... well let's just say that I wouldn't trade spots with you for all of the money in the world. Honestly.

Now back to the $40,000...

i don't even want to think about excel spreedsheets and my modifications..

i had to do it on my last car, and I had to get receipts made up when my car was broken into for insurance. some people say "oh i spent $50k on my car," but not many people can write it all out, modification for modification and see it on paper. to think if i just would have saved all that money, what i could be driving now..... but you can't look at things like that, it's like alan said, this is a hobby and you have to enjoy it for what it is, not the monetary hits you can take.

todd, that's not good about the tensioner bolt, how come you didn't call me about that one?
