Single exhaust on G/Z

ok so i have decided i am going to do a single exhaust on the Z, you know i am the crazy one, always trying to do something different and really dont care what people think. i am planning to do a special version of the turbonetics ST after the beginning of the year...

the single turbo has one 3 inch dump tube that comes straight off it and i am just going to continue to keep it 3" all the way out. fill the whole on the ride side so it looks stock or a simple body kit, nothing flashy, never was into the big kits...

just wondering what you guys think?? not going to change my mind, just your honest opinion

Pros:

-something new and innovative (i know its not the first, but havent really seen it in this area)
-half the weight of a true dual exhaust
-true japenese supercar look (supra, skyline gtr, rx7)

Cons:
-might not be accepted by the people who live off these boards and follow and worship only the norm and pre-tested a thousand times

im sure Finiti will chime in, her and i always think alike when it comes to cars and mods, lowest, loudest, fastest....

More than the look being an issue, (I can actually buy into the look) I would be concerned about the noise. The perception, and reality, is that the single exhaust is associated with a ricer exhaust tone at obnoxiously high noise levels.

If you keep the exhaust sound under countrol and at the right tone, it should be sharp.

i think its a good idea as long as it doesnt create more back pressure than u might want. other than that go for it.

but i also wanna know what is this special version of the t-netics, is it a stage 2?

3" single exhaust won't create any back pressure!

audiblemayhem are you gonna fab your own single with a muffler, or does someone sell a full 3" single muffler catback?

DC Sports and JIC make a pretty good single outlet exhaust for the 350Z...

You can fabricate your own 3" exhaust and use a HKS muffler...or one of the vendors on this site, I believe, has 3 single 3" exhaust set ups and 3 3" dual exhaust set ups.

Alan showed up to our first dyno day with a single exhaust on his G when he was NA. We all made fun of him for years. It's nice of you to take his place...

well the sedans have a single exhaust and mine sounded really low and rumbling until i put the test pipes in, then it was raspy sounding...

see i will just hit anyone that makes fun of me and that will put an end to it!!

i am having a 3" pipe ran all the way back and use a HKS muffler when i do it...

now about the turbonetics kit, i just want to change a few things, i think i just want their exhaust manifolds, turbo and downpipe, then i want to do seperate items for the rest of the kit

UTEC, different injectors, different intercooler etc

their kits is very complete to bolt on, but that is too easy...

when you want to do the exhaust, let me know.

My man in Miami does just about every serious high performance and race vehicle in South Florida. I think he is the only one in S. Fla with a mandrel bender.

When I go to his shop, I usually have him put the car on the lift, and then we brainstorm.

BTW, I finally got new exhaust buttefly valves. When closed, it sounds just like stock. Open them up, and it's my usual beautiful custom exhaust sound ( no rasp either!)

Isn't turbonetics in the process of a stage II kit right now? A T62 + 510cc injectors + some form of ECM I think are the differences. I think a single exhaust is the best way to go for a ST. Might just have to do something about the second outlet area on the bumper though.

yes. The passenger side side pipe now closes off completely. The driver side has some "holes" drilled into the butterfly so that it still allows exhaust gases to pass through it. Otherwise, it would choke off the motor. I have a few extra butterflies that I am playing with. I am trying to find the right number of holes (and size of holes) to that the car is not too choked off, but still "silent" when I need it.

The way I figured out if this would work was to go to Home Depot after the exhaust was finished. In the plumbing dept they have a block off plate that is galavnized steel. It has a thumbscrew on one side; when you tighten the screw, it squeezes 2 plates together, forcing the rubber gasket in the middle outward......seeling off a pipe. Well, they had one that fit my exhaust tips!

I plugged one tailpipe to see what would happen. Because I have an "X" style 2 in/2 out muffler up front, all the gases can get pushed out one side if the other is blocked.

I plugged one tip, and went for a drive. Essentially, I was driving around with a single 2.5" performance exhaust. Most of the "perfromance" sound was diminshe, but the car still felt the same as far as power output. Maybe I lost a little, but it wasn't noticable.

So, when I orded the valves ( www.dmhperformance.com ), I had them drilled 8 1/4" holes in each plate. Unfortunately, that didn't work the way I wanted. The car was too choked, and it didn't quiet it down enough.

The answer was to block off one side completely and drill numerous amounts of small holes in the other one. I am still working on the other plate.....

I thought we talked about this Jeremy. The shop that does all the high end custom exhausts for Supras(up to a 4" single like all the ones that are over 800whp) is in Oviedo. They did all the work for Jesus' and Hogan's cars. They also have a mandrel bender but they also stock tons of pre bent stainless pipes and fittings.
