My little project to get done before Lokey

So for the past couple days I have been slowly but surely working on polishing my timing cover (at least I think its the timing cover, but correct me if i'm wrong). In anycase i've jsut been using the little polish bits for my dremmel and some flitz to shine it right up. So far so good, although I need to go buy more of those tips for my dremmel as I have completely killed the ones I have now. Hopefully I'll have the whole thing... or atleast most of it done by saturday. Anyways this has been a fun and cheap thing to do. I think the cover itself is really ugly stock, yet I dont have the time or money to have it taken off and chromed or powder coated, so this was my best option.

Here are a few pics. Obviously the shiney part is the part I have polished and the rest is what it looked like stock.

That looks great!

I'll bet it's a lot harder than it looks, isn't it?

Ya its not that easy. The flitz I found in my garage... nasty old tube, but it works. I'll take pics of the pollishing wheels when I get new ones tonight, because my old ones are un recongnizeable. Interestingly, the cam covers aren't pollishing to a nice shine like the rest. I havent spent any considerable amound of time on them yet.... but for now they will not pollish. In anycase, I'm gonna work on it more later tonight and tomorrow. I'll take more pics then.

edit: I have a long way to before saturday... none of it is done as good as it can or should be

Ok well for an update the cam covers can be pollished they are just 3x harder to do and take 3x longer than the rest of the timing cover. So back to work with me. Oh and looking at these picutres for a second time after just seeing the timing cover itself... the pictres don't do it justice at all. It looks much better in real life.

Stpdevil, sometimes when polishing aluminum it is best to start by wetsanding it with something like an 1800 grip wet/dry sandpaper. Then you can hit them with your polishing bits and the Flitz. This MIGHT be the answer on those pesky cam covers.

Thx for the advice, maybe I'll give that a shot.

If it does I'll just buy an engine cover

The wetsand method will work for you. That is how people get motorcycle frames to shine. The idea is to sand the surface smooth, and then after that buff it with your polishing compound.
