Best Boost for Best Gas Mileage?

I was really looking into the 335i coupe not only because of handle but because its twin turbo with great gas mileage for the price of the car. However, coming to reality, I can not afford a new car, especially a 50k car at this time of my life.

I have no problem boosting a car but really concerned about gas mileage. I know you are asking why dont I just get a car with a weak engine to satisfy that need? HECK NO.

The three things I want are: coupe, power, gas mileage. This combo kind of contradicts each other but I know its highly possible. My question is if I boost a G35 coupe, can I get improved gas mileage if I dont drive like a bandit? I'm looking at a lot of highway driving around 60-80 mph. I had a boosted 97 maxima and I was very happy with the power. I can only imagine the same thing on a G. I love the sound of boost and thats 80% of the reason I'm looking at boosting, for that respect you get wwhen you pull up to someone and give a little rev to hear the whistle of air from BOV come out.

If its even possible to get better gas mileage from boost, which kit would do the best for highway driving? I'm guessing some version of turbo since you use the power early and less strain on the engine? Assistance please

Oh yea, my ideal G is black interior, navi and that sexy blue in the outside. looking at an 03-05, preferably 03-04 cause of slightly better gas mileage. Difference in power means nothing since I'm boosting anyway and G is pushing much more than my current max (222 hp 214 tq)

any time you add more air into the engine, you need more fuel to counter it from going lean. So if you're actually in positive boost, then your gas mileage goes down

for normal highway cruising etc out of boost, gas mileage is roughly the same on turbos. It's usually worse with superchargers

IMO, if you can't afford paying for additional gas with FI, you can't afford FI

Buy a manual C5 corvette . You can get 28 MPG on the highway EASILY with the really long 6th gear.

Yea, I understand the comment about if you cant afford gas for FI, dont get FI but i'm trying to mimic a 335i coupe without spending money for a 335i coupe. Mark350GT, thats exactly what I like to hear.

I knew corvette had a really good gas mileage but I'm not feeling their interior. Plus I want to hear a BOV when I shift.

yea I'm looking for the most conservative boost setup possible. I'm mainly interested in the sound and the small potential so anyone that thinks i'm stock can get a little dish of some capabilities. I was hoping this would improve gas mileage by a little or atleast keep it the same. With the simplest boost setup, do I need to change anything on the car? i hear fuel pump may need to be upgraded?

You want to boost your car for the sound? That's the first time I've heard that.

You won't be able to rev your engine at the stoplight ala Dodge Neon style and get the bov to go off. The turbos that go into our cars are too large for that.

Sounds like you should get a Neon.

well if not turbo, how about a supercharger? My 97 Nissan maxima was equipped with a Stillen Vortech Supercharger. Size was pretty big, produced about 80 horses at 11 psi (3.125" pulley) and I was able to get a lot of noise out my bov when I revved to around 4k. Sound comes before anything. I know it sounds ricey but when you go boost, you just want it back and I realized I dont have the time to hit the track and do the runs like I did in the past but its more of a personal respect thing where knowing I have it and hearing it is enough to feed my adrenaline. So from what it sounds, turbo may be out the question. I remember back in the day people telling me turbo doesnt really get noise unless its under load. The supercharger i messed with was somewhat the same scenario. its power increased as rpm's went up but i could still easily hear it. I prefer supercharger that see's power early but if I have to get one like my old maxima setup and get the sound that I want, i'm game.

So you make it a habit to sit at traffic lights and rev your car to 4k? That is soooo cool.

you gotta do what you gotta do to hear the sound.

as an alternative, you could always record the sound onto a CD and play it loud on the stereo

With my Stillen, if I'm not boosting, mpg is basically like stock. Basically with any F/I setup, if you boost, you're using more fuel. More aggressive tune with bigger injectors will mean more fuel as well. meccanoble, welcome to the G boards, but threads like this are gonna get you laughed at just as much as the old maxima.org days....lol...
