Thinking about doing a custom turbo install

If you are doing this because you want a turbo, that is absolutely fine and completely your choice. The only downside I see is that installing a turbo custom turbo system that will only give you 50hp will probably still end up costing close to a retail kit in the end, if done right.
My advice is to by a used Turbonetics kit (they sell all the time for like $3000, check out my350Z classifieds). This way, the cost is low, you get something you know is safe (as long as the parts are in good condition), you do get more power than you originally wanted but no one says you have to use all that power.
I think this route will be the same price-wise, give you more power that you can choose to use or not to use, and you will also have access to other people's FAQ's and troubleshooting problems with the kit. Something that is priceless a few years down the road, and you can also call up TN and they would give you help even though you bought it used. I'm only using TN as an example, all of the kits have there ups and downs, but for the least amount of money, and since you don't want a lot of power (>500), TN seems like a reasonable choice.

i second nitrous! you can get away with a 50shot without a tune, but I WOULDNT RECOMMEND IT! 50hp turbokit is really not cost effective, but thats just my opinion.

Full bpu's (intake, headers, tp's, exhaust, plenum spacer, reflash to correct A/F, and a small shot of nitrous since you already have the kit) that would be MORE then enough to keep up and outperform ALOT of cars, while still paying less then a custom kit that is done right, just my 2 cents though, GL!

What kind of maintenance is required to keep up not only the vehicle itself but also the nitrous system as well?
If you are capable, can weld and fabricate then you can do your own custom kit. That is what I did:

With a UTEC and Tuner it cost me about $2600. I used quality new parts (garret turbo, tial wastegate...ect). So if you do some shopping around you can probably put a good kit together for around $2k.
I ended up buying a Haltech, and that drove my budget waaay up but it's something I was ok with. I am hoping to dyno as soon as this dam snow melts.

you dont really need a UTEC, there are a couple of people running boost w/ osiris.
just look for an osiris tuner and you'll be ok
i would recommend getting a kit like the turbonetics, that you can find for dirt cheap (2.5k-3k) and running a boost controller to bout 6psi, 3psi is just a waste of money IMO
