4.0 Liter with new heads!

Going over some ideas with my shop foreman at work today. An idea that we are putting together is swapping the well know vq40de from the xterra, pathfinder, frontier, all that good stuff. Take the 07-08 heads, and put em on there. Some sweet configuration although I am sure someone has already done this!

Do the heads bolt up? How are you planning to work around the variable exhaust timing?

I wonder what it would be like to put on a VQ30DET bottom end, with the HR top end..... and get it all working together with something like a motec...

I thought about this too for a long time. Does everything bolt up? What doesn't?

For the most part yes. I mean its the same motor with some fancy tuning! Like the Quest? Same motor as us just different pistons and cams....and its FWD!

Why not swap the engine as is and get the ECU from the 6mt Xterra?

The displacement is perfect for a single turbo.

I understand that but I would simply swap the motor and put in JWT cams. The motor used is about $1000 and maybe $1200 shipped to your door. The JWT cams installed would be about $2000 or less. I would just do that. I would also get a Cosworth plenum and a single turbo system with 3.5" piping and call it a day

I've had this idea every since the VQ40 came out. It performs exactly like a V8 with a lot of torque which is what I'm after. 9's in the 1/4 glory

So the HR heads bolt up to the DE short block? This wouldn't work with a stock ECU right?
