Thinking of purchasing a used G35 with Twin Turbo. What to look out for???

I'm thinking of purchasing a silver 2006 G35 6-speed that has a greddy twin turbo setup. The car has an intercooler, oil cooler, etc... and has about 22k miles.

What should I look out for? Would you recommend a compression test? What else??

Thanks!

car looks good,id ask how many miles are on the tt kit..chances are those will be the hardest miles on the car.the vq's are pretty tough though, only 22k thats still a new car.

Very risky business buying a used FI G... while the VQ is strong in stock form they are glass when you install a supercharger or turbo.
good advice here. I'd be VERY hesitant to buy just about any car that had a turbo/supercharger added by the previous owner unless I knew that person well and how it was taken care of/driven.

Have it checked very thoroughly and be careful.

Knowledge is "Power!"

All logical opinions and worth while, also run a CARFAX to get some history....if there is any. Even junk yard dogs could have twin snails, better
to find out before you lay down the $$.... Could be the b/w pic but
the front, side and back pannels look different....color/shade!

Guys... thanks for all of your advice. But, what actual things do I need to look out for on a boosted car? I mean, if the compression test comes back perfect am I good to go?

BTW: Thats is a pic of my 2005 G35 coupe that I sold (8) months ago because I'm an idiot. That thing was as mint as it got! Sold with 34k, not one scratch, ding, dent and the interior was MINT!

if you can i would have him pop off the filters to the turbos check for shaft play. also check for oil leaks, get research about parts used in the build if he has any record of it. if its completely stock i would be kinda weary about it having TT on it also check to see what boost he is running on the motor. make sure that the work is done correctly and not the cheapest route possible

open up the piping near the throttle body and check for gratuitous amounts of oil. if seals are blown on the turbo there could be oil leaking into the intake side.

I would take it by a tuner and have them check the tune to see if it has run a legitimate tune by the person who tuned it previously. if it has run too lean or too much timing there could have been damage for a while without the owner knowing it.

I would also probably take an oil sample from it prior to a drive to send in for analysis. if it's being worn prematurely or due to improper tuning or other problems the data might be found in the fluids.

Check for all receipts for fluids and maintenance records. This person should have receipts for how often they change their fluids otherwise I wouldn't trust it. Pretty much all the basic stuff you would do with any engine.

Get a flash light and check for any leaks anywhere in the undertray of the engine.

Lastly, drive it. You or your VQ tuner will know if it's driving right or how it should drive.

You can't just pop the filters off and check for shaft play LOL. It's a PITA to get to the turbos. Take it to a shop that builds Z/Gs in your area and let them check it out. They will do a compression test, leakdown, dyno, check for oil in the IC piping and plenum, check for smoke on decel, boost. Most importantly you need someone that can listen for odd noises coming from the VQ.

Bottom line on the DE motor, be prepared to build the motor. If you get a good enough deal, I'd ****** it up and build her up. Good luck.

Whats worst case senerio?

-Bad turbo's? Can the Greddy TT be rebuilt and how much $?

-blown engine? How much to rebuild or would it need to be replaced all together?

Thanks again...

Worst case? Turbos might need to be rebuilt and rods could be bent already. BUT you'd be in a position to have a 600 whp monster at the end of it!

$4k motor, $3k install
$4k turbo kit remove/re-install
$2k turbo rebuild (not sure on this one, might be less)
$2k ancillary upgrades to handle the new power (at least clutch unless you've got a good one already)

A shop like Forged Performance are set up to ship cars at a reasonable cost. Send Sharif a PM and double check these figures. If you do all the work at one shop, you might get a package deal (or free shipping back and forth, etc).
