People With Turbos or Supercharger with non built motor.

I had a few question for the people that fit the category mentioned in my title. First off, how long do you plan on having the car, is it for a couple years or just for short while? I have the facts or Forced induction for noobs on the other website and understand that there is a certain point in which stock internals can hold power for but my main question is reliability. I really want to get a single turbo kit for my car and will tune it but a lot of people have said this makes the motor not last as long and die faster. Others say it depends on how much boost you are runnng etc. My ideal boost would be from 8lb to 9lb and my goal would be around 370-380whp so nothing too crazy. I plan to have the car for the next 5 years or so. Input is appreciated as i need to know what i can do.

thanks

its hard to say, everyone has different experiences

there are guys on my350z that are on 2nd or 3rd built motors while there are guys pushing 450+rwhp on stock block for 20k+ miles w/ no issues what so ever. then there are guys w/ 370rwhp that blew their motors w/ in 10k miles

you can have the perfect set up, the best tuner but something can still go wrong, its basically a coin flip

you have to be mentally and financially ready for something to go wrong at any time, if not then FI may not be for you

Just be prepaired for downtime, be prepaired for mishaps, be prepaired for the unexpected. If you plan on keeping the car that long I'd say just get the motor built and enjoy it.

About 26k boosted miles here with no motor issues. 1 track day and multiple autocrosses and hitting the rev limiter daily

I'd honestly plan on building the short block after a year. It's not as expensive as everyone thinks...

I'm getting mine done for 4.5k parts and labor.

so you build a motor for almost 5k and then buy a turbo for 6k or used if you lucky for 3k. end result is about 10k with tune. just buying the turbo kit with tune is kinda pushing it for me. im finishing up college but i prlly wont be able to get a new car until grad school is finished which is about 4 years away. I still wanna go F/I though...

BTW when i posted this on the other forum, someone responded with this i wanted to know the input from people with turbos

In my opinion the immediate torque and high boost at low RPM's from a turbo setup has a greater effect on reliability. I say this because when some turbo setups hit full boost well before 3000 RPM's, the engine is not breathing to it's fullest capacity which means the internals are under full pressure for longer periods before the exhaust cycle.

Again, this is just my opinion but I have seen it happen too many times that a turbo engine fails at lower RPM's ... blame the wastegate maybe or the tuner?

Just remember, the stock VQ is 10.5:1 compression and then add boost?? The R35 GTR has "only" a 9.0:1 compression with stock twins.

Just my 2 pennies...[/QUOTE]

^^^ My opinion on the low RPMs is that you have much higher likelyhood of detonation, not so much "more overall stress" or "not breathing properly". Someone with a bad tune or without the correct supporting mods (aftermarket ECU w/ knock sensor, ect) is more likely to grenade at a low RPM where detonation occurs most easily.
