What To Look For When Buying Used Car With FI?

Hey guys,

I searched and couldn't find anything substantial to answer my question so here goes:

1) Looking into buying a used G35 coupe, non-revup with a Vortech on it. I'm not too keen on FI but I know I've always wanted FI. Is there anything I should be looking out for on the car for signs that it could be a bad install, reliability issues, leaks, or just anything pointing to future breakage?

2) Before I dive into the deep-end, is it even a good idea to buy a used car that's FIed? I know if it's done properly it "might" be fine, but ya just never know these days right?

Thanks for any input guys =)

Coming from a guy who's in the process of doing it all himself I'll just let you know that you'll save a LOT of money if you buy one that's already built, but it is a gamble.

Things I'd look for:
Receipts/ paperwork for parts and who did the work especially
Get it fully inspected by a shop thats familiar with boosted vq35de's
Get a compression and leakdown test
check out the tune...
Feel how it drives..
other than that its pretty much a gamble like any used car :/

IMO.....Find the car...come over to the FI section a my350z and ask if anyone over there knows the car....Like the post above said...its cheaper to buy it already FI...IF...you find the right car.

First ...if it was built by one of the top VQ shops ...thats a start....ask the seller to have you take it to one of the VQ pros to have it checked out...leak down to start with.

Whats the MAX you are willing to spend? With that info i will be able to tell you if its worth it. There is someone that goes by the name of "Mad Scientist" that is selling his car....its FULLY loaded with power and well built. Just consider that to have a car built correctly with tons of (550- over 600 whp) you could spend as much as 27K to 30K. If some one is willing to sell you that car for 25K to 40K......thats a good deal IF IT WAS DONE BY A WELL KNOWN SHOP !!

Good luck.

This is a touchy problem with buying a used FI car.If i was going to sell my car which has Greddy twins on it and a rock solid tune.......i would know its a solid car cause i did everything myself except the tune.

The problem is if you dont know me or others on the forum that know me.......would you trust my car!!!!!

I would get a compression and leak down test to confirm the motors health then i would have an exp VQ tuner take a look at the tune first.

Find out who built it and post it up on my350z.com FI section. From there you will know if it is 'reputable' or if there is already a bad history, ect..

hmmm...all good things to look out for. also good points as to why maybe buying pre-done FI could be a bad idea.

has anyone had any success/epic fail stories?

There are lot of storys of the perfect used FI car.....just as many bad stories. If the car does not have a history on here or my350z.....its a flip of the coin.

Just have the car checked out BY A WELL KNOWN VQ FI SHOP...thats a must. the few $$$ you pay for them to check it could save you $$$$$$$$$ in the end.

It would cost you way more to FI the car after you buy it then it would to buy a good used car.

For example....Everyone knows my car....if I was selling it...you would be able to get all the info you need on it....I would be afraid to tell you how much you would have to pay if you wanted to copy what i have done...but buying it would save you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Just ask before you buy or have it done yourself.....thats what we are here for.

its a bolt on Vortech on a stock motor. thats so run of the mill that "knowing the car" is worthless. A proper leakdown will let you know what the deal is.

I purchased mine with a Turbonetics kit on it. Still running good. Purchased at 57k, im at 64k currently. Now instead of spending money on boosting it, i get to spend money on other upgrades (IE: Swaybars, full brake job, camber arms)

To be honest, I'm looking at Bashar's car in the marketplace. I've always wanted IP and this is bolt-on Vortech and he's just got a great package. I'm just worried about the FI status:

2004 IP G35

Plus, I do have the option of just buying a newer stock 2006 for cheaper. What would u guys do? I think Bash's car is reputable right? I've been searching and he got his car tuned at Church's and his install was reputable also.

Thoughts? News?

That car is solid and as for his rwhp.......churches dyno is said to read on the very high side.

As keith said ...the car is solid.....As far as getting a stock version cheaper....of course you can....now add up all that has been done on his car ...including the rims and tell me what you think it would cost for you to do it yourself.....I am quite sure it would be way more than 28K including the newer car.

Mike, how much will you sell me your car for? I think you have approx 5 times the orginal cost of the car into motors and turbo kits.
