Vortech Build.. Couple Questions

Okay so it's been 2 years that I own my G and now i wanna go FI. I already have Motordyne Dual Exhaust 2.5", Berk Tech High Flow Cats, JWT Clutch Flywheel Combo, Motordyne 5/16 Spacer. So I didn't wanna go the turbo route because for the money I wanna spend I would'nt get anything reliable. So I decided to go the Vortech way. I wanted to buy the V3 Tuner kit now I'm wondering what are the other components that i'm going to need.

What gauges do i need?
What fuel pump? Walbro 255LPH?
What Injectors? RC Engineering? Dearthswerk? HKS? 440CC? 650CC?
What fuel management? Osiris? UTEC?

I got about 8000$ budget, I will be doing the install myself and get it tuned by my local shop. Am I forgetting any parts other than those three components? And also how hard is it to change the fuel pump? I heard you have to remove the backseat.

Thanks in advance!

I few of these questions are going to depend on your goal... The v3 is a good idea for most DIY installs as that eliminates the need to tap the block. The down side is you will need to change the oil in the blower.

I would suggest:
Engine managment (Talk to your local REPUTABLE tuner and see what they like to work with)If I were to do it again I would go with Haltech.

Injectors will depend on what size pulley you choose but 440's will good with the basic setup. I would probally go with the DW650's so that if you upgrade the pulley you will have the injector to do so.

Walbro 255 - yes you will need to remove the back seat, its not hard. Instructions are on my350 I believe.

Guages - I would cuggest at the minimum, Boost, Wideband, oil pressure is nice to know.

You will be well with in your budget. As you have some good mods, to start off with. Any other specific questions I will be happy to answer. Good luck and do your homework before you buy anything, FI is a great thing but knowledge of FI is even greater.

thanks very much for all the tips. Well see I talked with the guy at vortech about the Pulley thing and if you go with a different pulley it does void the blower warranty. As for the oil changing in the blower that doesnt bother me, because at least the oil pan stays in a OEM state in case i do decide to take it off or whatever. I was also thinking Haltech for Fuel management everybody seems to recommend it now. Humm its kind of a conservative build because my engine isnt built for boost yet. I was wondering if I should change the PUSH Rods or not and if so what would you suggest. As far as injectors is there such a thing as too big of injectors for the amount of boost you run? Because instead of doing it twice i might just buy 650cc right off the bath!

our cars dont have "push rods."

get a haltech, 600cc injectors, walbro 255, and a zeitronix. you'll be set for reliability after that.

ok

Okay so I came across this video you guys probably all have.
I would like to know what he's running for a BOV and what upgrades does he have (injectors, fuel management, pulleys, bov)... Sounds pretty sick! Also would like to know if he's got a built engine.

You'll want to go with the 3.12 pulley to start. I can guarantee you won't be happy with the stock pulley that comes with the kit and since you have to pay for another complete tune when replacing pulleys, you might as well start with the 3.12.

Definitely need HFCs which you already have.

Plenum Spacer - Need to get rid of it. Although these are good for NA operation, once the manifold is under pressure (boost), they tend to leak like sieves which is not good.

For engine management, I really like Osiris. Its probably the least expensive and very versatile. And if someone says its unreliable, they are a liar - ask them for data to back up their claim.

But again, for engine management, see what tuners are in your area locally. If the only Uprev Osiris tuner is 600 miles away, you obviously don't want to use that.

hey..

you have the spacer tho don't you?? I'm pretty sure i threw out the old bolts out which freakin sucks now.. Humm what about blow off valve.. I want something that sounds mean.. Cuz i'm pretty sure the stock vortech BoV is a recirculating bov which probably doesnt make much sound.

vortech kits have a bypass valve (BPV), not a blow off valve (BOV). unless you're in boost, its always open so it makes a bunch of noise. it sounds like a rush of air - some like it, some don't.

no thats not the stock BPV. sounds like a HKS maybe.

really sounds like bad compressor surge = fail

No, i don't have the spacer. It was removed when i installed the Vortech.

Vortech SC's don't have blow off valves. They come with a bypass valve which is open except during boost. Also, its not re-circulating. The air is simply dumped out to the atmosphere which is why it has that "jet engine" type noise.

Regarding the video link you posted, my Vortech almost sounds like that. I get a very loud "blow-off" noise everytime i shift just like in that video. HKS makes a bypass valve thats a drop-in, but i've seen them and they don't seem too much louder than the stock Vortech. The HKS are a bit quieter when its running normally (not boosting).

Also, the guy is definitely at risk for compressor surge in that video. This is apparent especially at the end of his first run when the air pressure isn't released quickly. You can hear it "sputtering" (feathering) out when he releases the throttle as opposed to quickly dumping any excess pressure like the bypass valve is supposed to be set-up. At this point in time, the throttle body is closed, and all the back-pressure is just feeding back into the compressor.

Remember oil catch can, tranny cooler if you are AT, and to be patient!

Youre budget is PLENTY for this install. use the 312 pulley and the GTM pulley mod too. Slippage on the vortech is horrible without it.
