For those of who had one stop shopping for your builds approximately how long did it take for your builds to be more or less "completed."

I spent about 8 to 9 months with a Vortech SC and went back to NA and considering a full build to revive the aging car but this time with turbo(s) and a moderately built engine.

Just curious as to how long most of you took from the day you laid money down to the day you drove away with a running 450-600 RWHP.

I ask for those ranges secondary to the fact that much of the forum does not do built engines less than 450 and those with over 600 often are continuing to make improvements over time.

On my first build, I dropped it off in April 2008 and it was not ready until August 2008. On my second build, I dropped the car off in Nov. 2008, and I am still waiting. There are multiple shops involved this time and there is a lot of custom work, including flat decking the block, but the shops that I have dealt with seem to be inundated with work, and nothing happens quickly. Fully built Cosworth VQ35DE (balanced and blueprinted), head work, APS Extreme Twin Turbo, and a tons of supporting mods...

Build took 3.5 Months...car makes 550WHP on a very conservative tune. Car was built by Corner 3 Garage, head work by Port Flow, and tuning by Technosquare.

My experience being boosted has been very pleaseant. No issues whatsoever and I love my G all over again.

 

It really depends on what kind of work you are having done, the more basic the less time it will take.

 

Full builds: Some shops take forever. Some shops turn things around quickly. Unless you've got a ton of one-off custom crap going on your car, I think it's the shop that determines the time (beyond a couple months) not the actual build. For example, my build @415whp (everything minus a built engine) took 5 weeks. And this was a one-off, custom built kit. A built block with the same kit but more boost for 500whp would have set me back 2 extra weeks tops, but my bank account had enough by then LOL.

 

First build with 700bb= 3 months
Upgrading to 850bb=2months
Second build with all custom 9-10 months.....could have been done faster, but I was not in a rush and wanted them to take their time.

 

1 year to get it where I was happy with it. 3 months of that can be attributed to me (add on work because my understanding/expectation changed).

SC= 1 week: car gone, install+tune = 400whp
Build Engine= 2weeks: 2wk wait for build, then dropped car off for 2 wk install+tune= 420whp
TT= 3 months: had to swap TT kits because first kit sucked *****+ R&D stuff. Swapped APS TT for Greddy TT 20g= Finally 620whp

 

My TT setup installed with motor in car was 4 days.The tune took about 4 hours.

 

From when I dropped the car off till I picked it up it was about a month. Mostly because my flywheel was on backorder(2 weeks). Greddy TT making 490WHP @ 8PSI.

 

Turn around can be very fast if all the parts are there. My main point would be to physically make sure that all your parts were there before you drop off your car to start any work... Sh#t I'm still waiting for some misc. parts from GTM and I ordered them in Jan. and paid them in March.

 

I am pretty sure that this thread is talking about turn around time for a shop but just in case the thought to do it yourself came through your mind well....

If you plan on doing all this yourself I suggest you do A LOT of research. Read, read, read, talk to people, ask questions!! One big mistake I made was when I first started out is I never asked enough questions. Main reason was because I thought they were stupid or extremely obvious and I didn't want to look like a moron and try to avoid embarrassment. Nobody started out knowing everything, you gotta learn somehow.

If a professional shop builds your car, there is usually some kind guarantee in case the install/build the shop did was not performed right they will replace it or something. If you do it yourself make sure you double check and double check again and one last time check again after that to make sure everything is 100% correct. It would suck to throw 20K+ into your motor and have it blow up on your first test drive. I know I completely stated the obvious lol

Over 2 years.. research, parts, scheduling, various shops(machine, powder coater, head works), Tuning

Oh BTW, car is still in the shop just waitin on a few more custom things to be added, like my gauge setup, still working to up the boost just brought a Meth kit...600whp in no times..lol. I will pick up the car Aug 21 when I'm back in the states.

Next destination is most likely the body shop for a few weeks to get the body right.. then into my garage for safe storage.

 

Greddy TT, fully built FP short block, first invoice provided in Aug '09 for parts and labor. Work started shortly there after. All work with the exception of tuning is complete. Bear in mind, I have not pressed the timeline, plus the car sat on the lift for better than a month waiting for wheels I ordered elsewhere.
