turbo's affect on exhaust sound

Hey guys,

I've got the experts at CIN here in Charlotte working up an estimate for me to turbo (single or twin, not sure yet) my G35. I got to thinking, the exhaust note (even on my stock exhaust!!) is one of my favorite things about my car.

For you guys with more experience than myself, how much does the turbo alter the unique sound of the G? And does anybody have stock exhaust with a turbo setup? I know FI will eat up stock cats...

Thanks!

I have twin turbos with the HKS dual and straight pipes. Car has a much deeper exhaust note and luckily the turbos cancel out any rasp.

i would like to think the stock exhaust system would be way too restrictive on a turbo setup and would need to changed without question

I'm on a stillen and originally with their HFCs and catback exhaust I was a bit disappointed in the raspiness of the note while NA. Only at certain RPM but generally it was right in that area that you spend a lot of your stop and go time.

I got my 700BB JWT TT kit put in and some resonated test pipes and the exhaust sounds disgusting. Deep, mean- and no rasp whatsoever. I loved the stock exhaust note as well and this is as close as I've heard it if not perhaps a bit louder. Still deep and agressive. My brother heard it in an underground parkade and he said it sounded downright predatorial.

But yeah- your stock exhaust system is gonzo... I'd say no matter what!

I got Injen SES with a single turbo...Its much deeper, and sounds mean. You gotta throw stock exhaust away

I guess I should clarify.... I wasn't necessarily set on keeping the stock system. But I do want the same TYPE of sound (note, i guess is a better word). If it's a little louder that's even better, but whatever route I go, I want to keep the same sound characteristic that the G is known for. Just making sure that it was going to be possible to keep it.

Thanks

In that case then yes, absolutely. Even with test pipes I'm told at least with twins the note remains very deep... not sure with a single. I went resonated only because that was what was available but from what I've learned in my experience I could have put a row of pop cans instead of TPs and been without rasp.

OK great.... so what might be the best route to go with for exhaust considering I want the same note, potentially louder, as long as it doesn't have rasp (which it sounds like the turbos themselves will take care of)?

test pipes and greddy dual TiC you'll love it. no rasp real deep throaty sound and not over the top on the loudness with the resonators and mufflers it comes with. i loved mine but wanted it louder so i cut the resonators out and put in 2 3" pipes :P

TTs quiet the exhaust down alot as well, I had a stillen when NA it was quite loud since going TT it is noticeably quieter.

old old vid of mine with Stillen and twin turbos

However if you are worried about how turbos change your exhaust note maybe you should get a supercharger

Lookup Thom00001 he has a 1000whp TT setup with a special customized version of the stock exhaust made for his car.

His G coupe still sounds stock even with all that power.

I ran the APS 3.5" downpipes and the APS 3" TD Race exhaust on my TT setup (I had built motor, headwork, and cams as well though) and I LOVED the sound of my G!!! It sounded nothing like stock though, but IMO and those who heard it said it sounded absoulutely insane and better than stock.
