I was debating about this, build her up internally, cams, rods, maybe springs and lifters. Osiris Reflash on top of that, I'm thinking probably around 290ish HP

Lifters?

Z1's rebuild kit with upgraded rods is going to run you about $2400 (for the "stage 2" version since you'll need the gaskets). Add in machine work / inspection / cleaning while the block is stripped down, at a bare minimum, if not full blown blueprinting - I won't estimate cost, they vary way too much place to place. That runs about $500-700 in my part of NC and absolutely should be done, you don't want to build a shitty block that's got scarred cylinders, you want to find out if it needs to be bored / honed. Otherwise you're just hoping the **** will stay together. Cams with springs you're looking at probably $1k used up to around $2k new at the very high end, and there's your $4k budget.

You don't have it tuned at this point, you haven't started touching fuel (you'll make the stock injectors cry by now), and you haven't done anything for cooling. Since the engine's apart you should look at the pathfinder mod, and you ought to add an oil cooler and upgraded radiator since it's easy enough to do while the front end is off. And while you're doing all this other fun stuff add in a trans cooler and valve body upgrade / TransGo.

That will give you a good starting point for a Vortech later on. You'd be able to handle a V2 T-Trim and not destroy your engine.

You cannot afford to build a VQ on your budget, even with free labor. Most you can do with 4k is bolt ons and tune for maybe 270hp/250tq on a DE.

If you want a NA build for 290-300 range, you better budget 8k min in parts. Plus you need to have another 3-4k set aside encase something goes wrong, especially since your friend doesnt know his way around a VQ.

My friend works on g/z/gtr/sr20 240s most of the time. He's a Master tech at nissan and drifts part time. He's done vq swaps in 240s and worked on engines for customers with am cams, rods, piston heads etc etc

How much money do you plan on putting towards the car? Without an actual budget one cannot give recommendations.

do you have your heart set on building the engine? A simple vortech/stock block setup sounds more reasonable to me..

And even if that wasn't enough, you could have your friend build you a shortblock on the side to swap in later for more power.

My gripe is the rods in this engine suck for forced induction, what internal work would be best done before going the FI route

You're looking at $15-$20k after it's done. That's on top of the cost of the car. You're doubling the high retail value of the car that you will never, ever get back.

That's getting really close to a 500hp used Z06

Frank, can you paint the whole car? Let me know.

Pretty much painting the whole car over, trying to find something that isn't 10k. Looking for a matte blue. for everything but the CF grille, hood and trunk
