Twin Turbo and Supercharger Questions...

Hey everyone, i'm pretty new to the board, and i just bought an 04 g35 coupe 6spd. I really want to do a twin turbo set up or a vortech supercharger. But one big thing i'm concerned about is the motor. I dont have the money to build the motor internally, and i know forged pistons and rods and resleeving always helps. I was wondering how safe i would be by running a GREDDY TWIN TURBO KIT with intercooler and supporting mods such as exhaust, downpipe and so on, on stock internals... as in, how long would this last??? I dont want the engine to fail on me, i need it to last. I wont mess with the boost pressure, most likely i'll leave it at the lowest setting around 4-5 psi i believe. Any help would be great!!!

With such a low boost setting your motor should last. Whenever you get it tuned have a very conservative A/F setting to avoid detonation. I mean you could blow a motor at those boost levels if you lean out. There are 2 primary concerns you have to deal with in the FI world. 1) Leaning out the motor and detonating. 2) Running too high boost levels and the strength of the internals failing under the presseure built in the cylinders. This will most likely not be a problem with such low boost level. The real danger for the G are (as anyone on this forum will tell you) is the weak rods. But With 5 psi and a good fuel system to not lean the motor out you should be totally ok. With the right supporting mods that set up, if done right, could get you just over 300 whp or more depending on the surrounding mods. Most importanlty, a good manual or electronic boost controller to control boost spiking is a great idea to save your internals. In the long run, a $500 electronic boost controller is a lot cheaper than a new motor. If you are really worried about things going wrong like I was....get a water injection kit to reduce intake temperatures as an even better safegaurd from detonation. I also went with an incredibly thick head gasket to at least take some of the load off the cylinders. The gasket will set you back $160 or so but the install on it will put that mod at about $750+ depending on the shop.

I think you could run up to 7 or 8 psi as long as u have proper fuel management. These kits come with intercoolers with will allow u to run safely around that much boost. Anything above you should consider upgrading the internals. Tuning is a must though.

!!

I live in chicago, and i am fortunate to have a performance shop, GRD, in my area which primerally works with APS TT setup. The owner, Tuan, owns a Z which has been boosted to about 11 psi at which point he is running 500+ WHP on stock internals. His advice to any FI is TUNNING! Yes! you can blow the motor even with 5psi if u run too lean. So tune and enjoy it!!!!
ohh by the way there are many Z/G around here tuned by him to around 450+ WHP....
