New Bumper Necessary?

When getting FI do you need to get a new bumper for the front mounted intercooler? How essential is it? Will the stock bumper suffice?

It will suffice but when you want to get a few extra mods then you need better air flow, I found out today that I def. need to get rid of my stock bumper. New one goes on hopefully in a few weeks.

If you get the TN kit, you do not need to replace the bumper. The FMIC comes with dual fans that mount in front of it.

Cool

Well.....my buddy Chops just installed the TS bumper after running the Vortech with the stock one for about a year.

He says there is a BIG difference in performance now. He also needs to get it retuned as he is running much leaner.

And there's another reason, you don't NEED to. It'd be nice, but I've decided to stay stock for now...others that I know noticed no dif after installing an open air dam bumper other than aesthetics...the FMIC that comes with this systems does a great job cooling the charge to begin with.

Randy, I had my car tuned this past weekend (Z car garage)and when we got up high around 5-6k we noticed the car started to detonate and had to pull extra timing, also after one dyno run we noticed the FMIC was heatsoaked so we had to wait between runs, now with a better opening up front I am sure we could pull back some of that timing and pick up addtional power.
My car has maybe a few more mods than the normal Vortech guy but when when you add on new toys and create more power then that will create issues.

would the Turbonetics FMIC setup theoretically help with heatsoak moreso than other kits since the fans continue to run even at idle (thus pulling fresh air thru the FMIC even when the car isn't moving)

do you guys think it is possible to add a similar fan setup to other FMIC setups?

i would like to go F/I, but would like to retain the stock front fascia to keep the sleeper appearance. i like the SFR and (eventually) JWT kits because of the dual intercooler options, but cost is a factor and i'm not looking for maximum RWHP.

Randy do you have any more information about that? i see the dual SPAL intercooler fans listed there, but how is he mounting them, controlling them, etc?

I'm not an expert but wouldn't a bumper be immaterial when on a dyno? There is no airflow other than from the fans in the shop going to the car, which in my opinion don't really simulate driving conditions. So if there is heatsoak on the dyno, i could be from just the lack of air period, regardless of what kind of bumper is being used.
