I want a turbo but to many obstacles :(

So for this past month since we hit that 60 degree weekend all that has been on my mind is forced induction. The other night I went out with a few friends. I met up with a supra, a few STI's, ducati, and a few civics. On the highway even though we wernt racing I felt I couldnt even hang with the 2 STI's. One is putting down 450awhp, the other 340awhp. The supra had a custom single turbo, I dont know the stats but it was hangin with the STIs. I felt like I was in the same league as the civics and even though I have respect for most of those guys, it was not a good feeling.

Ive been readin a lot about forced induction lately and I think if I were to go with one it would be the turbonetics single turbo basic setup at about 8lbs.. prob make about 370whp. I really want to do this but their a few things holding me back, and its not all about the money. The money I would need a month to save but I "can" get it. Other reasons holding me back is my G is my only car. I need the car to get to work and school every day so the install time , the tuning time, and im sure it will require a lot of trips to the shop as well. These things can't happen. The car needs to be reliable. I have to trust that every time I go out in the morning it turns over. Its bad enough when I have to bring it to the dealer for a problem becuase they cant give me a loaner (not 21 yet) so to actually get my car servcied is a huge fiasco becuase I need to find someone to follow me up their, then bring me to work or wherever I have to go, then I need to get back up their somehow, its just a mess! I know I could get a second car but I just dont have the room at my house for a second car and I cant afford a second car, insurance on the second car, and forced induction.

Does anyone else have these kinds of problems when modding?

personally i would just save up some money and buy a project car, a used MR2 turbo or turbo DSM and mod the heck out of it. The G is too nice to mess with it like that, and your resale value might drop way down once you start messing with FI.

orrrrrrrrr

you can get gc8 subarus for really cheap.... mod those all day long and never be done....

however i would say...

find a friend with a car ask him if you can borrow it for a couple days why your car is worked on. as long as the turbo is set up properly. especially a st with just 8lbs being pushed... I would consider that to be very reliable.....you arent talking about a complete engine swap or something...

Weren't you thinking about selling the G?? I dunno man, they money factor is hard to ignore.

The G isn't all about straight line speed...if you want the power, then I would 100% say you should just sell it and pick up an EVO..a few mods on that car will put most of those guys to shame.

If you have to go FI on the G, I'd say go with the more reliable supercharger.

The G is VERY fun boosted. I say find a GOOD shop that has done many installs and I think you'll find there wont be as many problems. The key is finding a GREAT installer, tuner. I have a beater civic I drive, 92 coupe. I paid 800.00 for it and its a solid car. I REALLY dont think I would need it but my G is my baby car. Ive had NO problems with my G.

To me to go FI you either 1) have to be ready for a long-term commitment to your car 2) must have too much $$$ to spend. Because very soon the new G or another car will come out and you're going to want the latest and the greatest. If you enjoy your car and truly have fun with it and don't mind shelling out 7-8 Gs for a turbo that you'll never get back, plus the decreased resale value - go ahead and do it. Based on my personal experience, if I wanted to go FI I would sell the G, buy a used 350z and put the difference towards FI, just because I believe the 350 is more suitable for FI and that's why you see a lot more of them running around.

And as far as being without a car for a few days, get out you have to be kidding me. I'm sure your parents, friends, cousins or whoever it might be wouldn't mind renting a car for you to drive to work. What's a few hundred bucks. Heck, you can even get a bike if your job is not too far. If there's a will, there's a way

i say just wait until your warranty runs out and then start FI. No pt blowing your motor when it's still covered by infiniti

yea, it was more about me being unsatisfied at my job, but I got a new one.

I dont like that racer out of the box stuff. People know evos can be fast, and 90% are modified. Boosted G's are very rare to come by.

Not necessarily the initial install, but here is an example. When I went to Ballistic/Avalon racing a few months ago to get some stuff installed, a desert platinum vortech g35 was in the shop with no blower. The blower had to be sent back to vortech becuase it was killing belts every few hundred miles. He said that this was the third blower for this car. He also said Chris's blower (blue G with greddy front, ken rear, and sf winnings) has been through a few blowers as well. I went back almost a month later and that SAME desert platinum vortech G was still in the shop. Case in point, I CAN't have that stuff happening.

Yup, FI is high maintenance. I've heard of other people on their 2nd or 3rd Vortech. I don't know what the problem is, the kit or the install, or the tune. The TN ST is supposed to be pretty reliable, if I were you I'd poke around my350z and ask your question there if you haven't done so. See what kind of problems people have had with that setup and then just weigh the pros and cons.

That just about sums up my original post about why I have to many obstacles.
