basically the 335i is the perfect example of what i was trying to talk about for the last 2 years, but people would mention that the price difference between a lancer (n/a) and an evo (f/i) is about a 15-20k difference... and the wrx sti, and the neon/srt-4, etc... all i simply said was, 'same car, different engine'. this apparently isn't possible for some reason, and this is what i'm confused about. there was talk about a smaller lighter 'baby z' a year ago, possibly having a 4 cyl. why not turbo that 4 cyl?

anyway, i got the number - 75hp - based off of the concept of what bmw did - 70hp/100ft-lbs tq.

they took a 3.0 and added a turbo (with some other adjustments, granted).

so we have a 3.5 (3.7), i estimated a 75hp increase. but the maufacturing cost of a turbo is less than 2k. since nissan would not be purchasing these retail, one could assume they could get them pretty cheap, labor would cost the same as it does now for the factory.

and i got the cost increase estimate from bmw based off of a few options/standard:
seat memory
xenon headlights
17" rims (328 comes standard with 16")
reverse passenger tilt outside mirror
driver seat power adjustable (8 - optional on 328)
passenger seat power adjustable (8 - optional on 328)
these options also become standard on a 335, however all are optional on 328 (for an additional fee). if you'd like i'll even find out how much they are, to extract the difference (although still retail) between the 328 and 335 turbo option all by itself.
To boil it down, yes, BMW did add a turbo. HOWEVER, from a technological and efficiency standpoint, the 328's motor is more advanced than that of the 335.

the 335 uses older technology with FI; the 328's design is much more advanced.

A good comparison could be a honda K series vs F20C/F22C.

The F20C makes more power than a K20, but the K series is a much more advanced engine. the F20 just has more brute force.

i think people are more prone to a k20 because it is better fit for a FWD drivetrain. i have never seen someone swap a s2k engine for a k20..

doesnt the 335 engine make better gas milage? (when driven normaly)

If you say the 335 is old technology then your crazy. you should spend some time over on e90post before making a statement like that. search shiv@vishnu......... lemme know what you find.

i think in the next 3-5 years with smog and many restrictions on emmissions youw ill see more and more cars come with OEM turbo and s/c kits. the big v8s that they are trying to push will not be able to be around with all the green cars and the push for every oil company to change fuel to liquids F.T.L.

you can get more HP out of a car if it has a small displacment and FI. thats why i think in the next gen or even gen after that we weill see FI.

^^ +1 More and more US vehicles are going to start seeing small displacement, turbo motors. They've been doing this in Europe and Japan for years, and I think with the rising cost of gas the US is finally starting to see why. However, isn't it MORE difficult to get a turbo motor to pass emissions?

Also, I don't think another turbo Z is out of the question. It wouldn't compete with the GT-R at all, especially since it'd probably make less power. It's a completely different car, targeted at a completely different audience. LOTS of people would be interested in a turbo Z if Nissan could build an affordable one, and I think they could.

Road and track article on 370z.....

What this means is the new Z will be a rocket. A reliable source in Japan has told us it will be powered by a 3.7-liter V-6, the same engine used in the Infiniti G37 coupe, with output bumped to 350 bhp at 6500 rpm and torque to about 280 lb.-ft. at 4500. This new power-to-weight ratio for the "370Z" will allow the car to reach 60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds, and should give the Porsche Cayman S a run for its money around any racetrack.
