properly breaking in the engine

properly breaking in the engine

Hi Guys, I just picked up a 06 G35 coupe and i was told that inorder to brake the engine in, i would have to keep it under 4000 rpm. Is this correct?

I'm not sure about that, but I wouldn't suggest "driving it like you stole it" at first. I didn't redline our G until about 3000-4000 miles in service. That took some serious restraint!! I also changed the oil at about 2500 and then again at 6400 miles. I planned on doing that second change at about 5000, but I didn't have time. The first two changes were dino oil, but at 6400 I started her on her permanant diet of Mobil 1 extended performance oil, which will be changed every 4000 - 4500 miles.

Just what I did... not necessarily the correct thing.

Many debates on this...

In either case, I kept mine under 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles. After that, I let her go to 5000 rpm up until 1500 miles and the let her rip! As I see it, the mantra "Drive it like you stole it", "The car was broken in already by Infinti", and "Modern car don't need to have the engine broken in" are for those who will not be keeping their G for more then the warranty period. This is a very good reason why I wouldn't buy a used sports coupe or sports car with too many miles on it. So far, my engine is running fine with no problems *knocks on wood*. 1200 miles for most is about 1 month. Have fun once you do let her rip!

Breaking in a car correctly, and changing the oil when required are the 2 most
important things you can do for it.

Welcome, Martino17_1998, initially take it easy in the G, and altho keeping it at 4k and below is important, an occasional trip to the upper reaches of the rev-band won't hurt.

I have read some research that suggests that high revs on a new motor will enable the heads to seal better, but I wouldn't risk it w/ my own car. For the most part, staying below 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles is good advice. At around 800 miles start reving higher, but make sure the car is fully warmed up. After 1200 take her up to 6, but always have the engine fully warm first (which is important anyway). Eventually, you want the ecu to program your car for high performance.

The VQ35 is pre-conditioned and high tech (and hence does not need the amount of breaking in that other engines need) but again, better safe than sorry. Some also claim that the VQ doesn't throw metal shards when breaking in (which is why you change oil before 1500 miles) but I would change early to be safe. Stay w/ dino for 5-7K then switch to synthetic.

Yeah I tried to follow the break-in instructions when my mom's G had under 1200 miles. I did hit 5,000 RPM once in that period but I figured it's probably good for the engine.
