Windshield Glass again??

So it seems there are a number of threads out there discussing chipped / cracked windshields - and sure enough, I've got one from a small pebble. Fortunately my insurance (Allsate) covers replacement - but here's the interesting part. They will replace it with OEM glass if I want. It sounds like a no brainer but I've been reading that the OEM glass is not good quality. Any truth to that? Should I look for another manufacturer and if so which one?

Thanks!

How about optical quality though? Any distortions?

I believe Nissan uses PPG glass, which is the same brand I got when I went OEM.

I've been on the road recently ( impromptu travel...the best kind ) and had a bad chip in my windshield. I was cleaning it and pressed too hard near the chip, thus causing it to spread. I'll need to replace the windshield. I'm scheduled to have it replaced by safelite for $215, Friday, but I'm wary of their services after reading some online reviews.

The original authors of this thread appeared to hear only good things, so any input regarding their quality of work would be appreciated. I'm curious about issues with their installations on our cars. I didn't request an OEM windshield, so info on their aftermarket glass would be awesome.

I did. Here is the long and short. It was CHEAP...about 180 for the entire install. At first glance, they did a great job. At second glance, they did scratch my paint in one or two spots when they tried to pry off the old rubber gasket, which they were able to reuse. The problem was, in my case, there were two new guys doing the install on my car. When a more seasoned installer came in, he finished it very quickly and with few problems.

The glue they use got on the outside and inside of my car. None of it stuck, and was easily removed. When I noted it to one of the installers, they began removing it, so it was a clear oversight. There are no distortions. It looks great. The installed glass is flush with the frame and the old gasket fit back w/o any issues. They did a great job, esp for a great price. I'd go for it. Despite the dirt they left behind, I'm very happy. I filled in the scratches, and since they were in an inconspicuous location, i'm not going to get bent out of shape about it...esp since they were newbies, and they saved me over 200 bucks versus other local installers.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. I just moved to MD, hence the need for me to replace my glass so urgently.

Cool. I've got an appt. for them to come to my house next Sat. I will kick my wife's SUV to the driveway and back up my G centered into the garage and then I'm going to watch them like a hawk. "Let me see the glass before you start on my car to check for distortion, and uniformity and color match of the tint"-- "Please don't lean on my paint, Sir". "What kind of primer do you use to cover any paint nicks?" "Did you nick the paint?" "Thanks for draping the dash so the urethane does not get on my car"
Then before they leave I will sit in the car and look out and from the outside I will look into the car and check for distortion. I will also check for wind and water leaks in the next few days and then forget about it.

yeah, I'm a tad bit ****.

oem glass is better quality. but at my dealership i can choose whichever glass company to sublet work to. Sometimes i use safelite, but ive used all star glass, hi tech, alpha auta glass, and auto glass services. There all going to be a hell of alot cheaper then oem. oem glass for some of our cars are like $600 for just the glass not including gasket and install. i would without a doubt get oem if i had the choice.

Overall, I am happy. I asked to look at the glass b4 he started and it looked great(looks even better, now installed) perfect. It is clear and has the nice even tint above and the same circled dots like OEM on the edges(not the square dots). Hopefully I get no wind/water leaks (and proves to be durable) as I test it in the next few weeks and years!. I told the guy to not lean on my paint and he did by the fender, but honestly I don't think he could do his job without doing that a bit. There was a small surface scratch that I think he did, but It may have been there. It buffed right out. He covered the interior seats and dash etc. The price was great at $273 including new wipers and a small discount they gave me.

I just need to clean the G now.

I would recommend them.

Sorry to bump up an old thread. Since I'm new here, but not to fourms in general I'd rather keep the thread going by searching than making a new one. Only question I have is I just bought a 2007 g35 sedan and the windshield has a dime size crack in it from a rock. It's right in front of the drivers view and is starting to spider. I got a quote to do it on Monday that came out to 185$ installed. I did a quote on safelites website and it said 325$. On the quote breakdown it said" Windshield green tint/blue shade solar" Is there a special windshield for these cars that help with glare and whatnot? The price is great but I'm not about to cheap out on my new car. So I guess I'm asking do these cars take a special kind of windshield?

Most insurance companys will replace your windshield for free if you have a crack or sizeable chip in the drivers line of sight. I believe that's a law in most states....Gary
