Driving 40-45mph
What gear does everybody have the tranny in when driving around 40-45mph? I was driving down the street at 43mph and i shifted into 5th gear. The person riding shotgun asked me "what the hell are you doing?" He told me the driving at 43mph in 5th gear will ruin my tranny faster than normal. Is this true? My RPMs are at about 1900 going 40mph.

Save some gas. Don't drive in 2nd gear at 43MPH just to hear your exhuast.
Sometimes I go from 1st to 3rd to 5th while driving around town.
I heard something about the new corvettes and how Chevy recommend going from 1st right to 4th.
Drive however you want. There isn't a right or wrong way.

I drive around town in 5-6 gear regularly. No need to keep the engine revving unnecessarily.

1st to 3rd to 5th - or 2nd to 4th to 6th - or 1st, 2nd, 3rd and then 6th.

gear skipping isn't bad, but "lugging" the engine is not good. you put a lot of stress on internals pushing the engine out of its power band. my understanding is that driving a car way under revs is like driving a car uphill all the time. your engine has to work harder to push your car in a steep gear causing unnecessary wear and tear.

Usually at 40-45mph, I'm in 4th gear, but if I am going to maintain that speed for several minutes, there is nothing wrong with going to 5th gear.
Lugging the engine is making the engine turn slower than it is supposed to, such as when not even the engine enough throttle when starting from a stop. As long as you are above 1,000rpm you should be fine....but at higher speeds cruising in a gear at like 1,400rpm you will see it is worse gas mileage than being in a lower gear to spin at like 2K+ rpm because the engine has to work so hard to maintain the speed.
