Deep Scratches in Paint...Help!
Deep Scratches in Paint...Help!
This is not concerning my car but my brothers truck has some deep scratches that cannot be removed with any scratch remover that I have. Is there a way to go this without professional help? They are not gouges (sp?) just meerly deep scratches. They have not gone down to sheet metal either. Consider it looking like someone keyed your car. Ive heard of clay bars but I am not sure what they are used for. Has anyone had any experience with this?
Paint cleaning clay is just remove surface contaminates. To fix the scratch you have to know how deep the scratch is. There are 2 classifications of scratches. One is where the scratch go thorough the paint into the primer/sheet metal. Theses are the worst kinds of scratches and the only way to fix these are with touch up paint. The second kinds of scratch are scratches that go through the clear coat and some of the paint, but not to the primer or sheet metal.
To fix the scratch you need a orbital polisher, clay bar, polish and wax. First you remove surface contaminates with the clay bar. Then use the orbital polisher with a polish applied to the orbital pad. Use a little pressure to work the scratch out. There are different kinds of polish you can buy that are more aggressive to get deep scratches out, but you always want to start with the least aggressive polish then work towards the most aggressive if no progress is made. After the scratch has disappeared or lessened use a wax to protect the paint. The wax will also make the scratch disappear if it is still visible after polishing. I would recommend using griots garage polish. They run about $13 each.
Hope this helps out.
