Question for people that know insurance well

My father has been telling me that since I live with my grandparents, and that they both got new cars recently (past two months), that I will need to be the primary driver on the insurance of the car that I will be getting. He is also telling me that if I'm the primary driver, it will cost 5k-6k annually (I will be 16 years old and hopefully won't have any accidents). Is this true? I'm sort of suspicious because he has been telling everyone but me that he is going to purchase a new house.

I'm sorry if this isn't directly related to the G35, but this forum is well populated with well knowledgeable people that I felt could help me.

Are you taking out your own policy or adding your car to your grandparents policy??? If adding, you would not be listed as the primary driver. Still be prepared for a steep insurance quote though. You are one of the insurance company's worst case scenarios. 16 years old, new driver, insuring a relatively high-performance car. Good luck.

I see. Would these steep insurance rates fall anywhere near the 5-6k mark? I'm pretty sure I won't be driving a high performance car because I have to pay for it myself, maybe something I can find thats around 15-16k.

Also, to clarify why I am suspicious, I feel that maybe he doesn't want to pay for my car because he is gonna be buying a (at least, probably more) 800k house, along with new furnature, etc.

depends on the company but if you do not have your own car, expect to be listed as primary on the more expensive of the two. I am not sure what your rate will be but yes, you are going to get screwed.

I don't think he's buying a G35, but either way, insurance rate will suck.

I would suggest you calling an couple of insurance companies and ask them for an insurance quote, they will be able to help you out.
