Depends on the wheels. Most people buy XXR or Rotas, where if they even get a scratch it is cheaper to throw them away than to fix.
Is the $40 to add them in addition to your collision coverage? If so, what is your deductible? If it is $500+, then it probably isnt worth it.
I have USAA and my wheels are covered anyways without paying extra.

nah i wouldnt insure cheap wheels. my deduct is $500 my premium is $380 6 mos. yea the $40 a year is to add to my coverage. i got me some volk gts'. i wouldnt make a claim for small stuff. this if for the event my car is totaled or wheels are stolen. otherwise they would only cover the cost of stock wheels

Your comprehensive insurance already covers the cost of stock wheels and tires. Stock wheels run about $600 each plus $1k for tires and $400 for TPMS and mounting/balancing. Last time I remember someone filing a claim for stolen stock wheels, dealer quoted $4400 for replacement. How much of that you actually get is dependent on how good your insurance company is. Cut rate companies like Erie, General, ect will pay pennies on the dollar and you will have to fight them. Companies like USAA will just give you 80% on the dollar (personal experience). So unless your wheels are worth more than 4k, it isnt really worth getting additional insurance on them.
anyone who works in the insurance company have an answer? one thing my agent told me is that if i do insure my wheels i should insure the full value for a replacement set and not wat i paid for them which is wat i thought was the smarter play bc i thought if i left it as stock wheels id get barely anything for it.

i talked to my agent and he said that if i were to make a claim for wheels and wanted a check instead they would give market value. how thats calculated idk and he doesnt know but its gotta be less than half considering the age of the car. or if i really did want the stock wheels replaced then they would source it from the dealer or whoever else would supply it. so if i do go the additional coverage route id do full value of $5k for the aftermarket wheels. . gotta have my agent recalculate the premium

You don't need extra insurance if the wheels are on the car, and you have a reciept. Not sure what everyone is talking about. I had a G get totaled out and Allstate paid out for all the mods and wheels i had receipts for.... then I had the car towed to a nearby shop, and i took all my stuff back before the insurance wrecker came to get it. so they paid for all my mods and i got to keep them, they are on my current G.
