Trade-In Help
Trying to buy the new 07 G35 Sedan. I currently have a 2005 Nissan 350Z Roadster that is in perfect condition - fully loaded with the nav system and only has 12,500 miles. For the Kelly Blue Book values for trade-in excellent is listed at $29,050, good is $27,550 and fair is $24,845. Anyways, during my negotiating process at the dealership when it comes time for the trade-in value the dealership offers me $23,000 or $23,500 for the vehicle. I go online to auto trader and look at the ones for sale by local dealerships with the same year, same milage but they don't have the nav systems and the dealers are asking $31,900 for them. If they give me $29,050 for my car which is excellent condition then they are still going list the car around $32-33K which will give them a $3-4K profit plus the profit they make off me with the new car as well. I try and explain this to the dealers and they insist that $23K is all the car is worth and what they going for at auction. So it seems that the dealer wants to make $9-10K off my trade-in plus the profit on the new car. Does anyone else think this is rediculous or is this just the way everyone works in the car business when it comes to trade-in's? Any suggestions?

If you can, sell it privately......I was planning on trading in my I35 when I ordered my coupe, but the dealer was insisting that they could only give me around 15,500......I checked kelly blue book, and the resale on my car at the time was 22,000.
I decided to sell it privately, and got my price....saved myself a 6000 loss..
Good luck

I would try and sell it privately be cause the stealership will never give you what your car is worth. I inquired about trading my 04 in and when I brought it to them they offered me 19k and change. After taking the car home and cleaning it up and giving it a nice wax I went back to get the extended warranty and got another appraisal. This time they offered me 24k. I notice that they will give you somewhere between 4000 and 6000 less and the turn around and sell it for 10k more than what they offered you. My opinon would be just keep it.

Yeah, I just spent $150 this morning and had the car listed for sale in my local paper and autotrader. The nice thing is I am in a situation where I don't have to sell my car tomorrow and because of that I'm not going to give it away - especially to a dealer on a trade-in. Once the car sells, I will be paying 100% cash for the new Infiniti G35 Sedan so that should help me get the best price there as well. The only other question I had was should I list the car for sale on Ebay as well? I have heard mixed things on people trying to scam others selling cars on there. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yup, dealers will always rape you on a trade-in. That's what you pay for the convenience of being able to dump it and their way of saying they really don't want it. Just put it on Autotrader and wait. If you have a CarMax in your area, you may want to try them. I've heard mixed reviews on their offers, sometimes it's better than the dealers, sometimes not.

i am also in the same process of selling my coupe. the dealer's asking price was 31,900 for a similar car in your area doesn't mean they will sell it for that price, usually ppl neg. it to 29,500, so there's no way they will give you 29 for your car.
I agree with others it's better to sell it yourself. make sure you wash it well.

You can't go by KBB because all it reports is what the Dealers say they paid for the tradein and it typically is inflated because it includes the discounted dollars off the new car being purchased. I think Dealers make a lot more money on used cars than new ones.
If you have a low mileage '05 coupe, the best that CarMax will pay you is $24K but they will list that same car for around $30,500. Not a bad racket.
