Most of them had VDC off + were driving recklessly. That is a bad combo right there. VDC is not fool proof, but it will only help your chances of recovering from a mishap
I just dont understand why people turn it off on public streets? The street is not a race track, and if you think it is you have no idea what racetracks are like (not intended to original poster, just people in general)

Sorry to hear about the crash but it sounds like he was going too fast for the conditions. Even with winter tires 45mph is pushing it in snow at night in city driving conditions.

people think vdc is going to save u no matter what, The car can be dangerous with vdc on OR off. VDC is a feature that makes people think it is safe to do stupid things but that is not the case. 99% of the time my vdc is off and the car feels way better that way. VDC on the car is going to understeer and make u crash if u don't know the limit. VDC off the car is going to oversteer and make u crash again if u don't know the limit. It can be helpfull in rain but agaiin it all depends on your right foot.
The engine is designed to telescope under the car, in front of the 2nd firewall that is designed to protect the brake controls and battery.
The 2nd firewall will keep the battery from being damaged in the case of a head on impact.

Two airbags deployed, and I was fortunate enough to hit them (I was sitting in the passenger seat, someone else was driving). Only the airbags deployed that needed to deploy to protect us. It was kinda cool, even though it really sucked.
