5AT downshifting by just moving lever?

This happen to anyone else's G? On the freeway the other day at 70 put it over into manual mode just for kicks. Was surprised when the dashboard readout said '4', and could hear the engine rev up. Back to auto, and tried it again, while watching the RPM's. Sure enough, they jumped up a couple of thou. My question: is this normal? I mean, you'd think it would stay in the same gear when moving the gear shift to the manual side. Why should it downshift on its own? Can't tell if it does it at lower speed, 'cause one doesn't know what gear the trans is in, while at 70 safe to assume in 5th.

yes it's normal... at least to the extent that my car does it too... Never tied it at supper high mph though (140ish)... but for normal freeway driving 70, 80, 90 whatever, you will be fine. I use it all the time as a quicker passing gear than letting it downshift automatically… damn I’d wreck if I waited for full auto to get me out of a pickle…

I'm curious now though at real high rmp (like I said 140ish mph in 5th I think is 6K rmp or so) what would happen... I'm not gonna try it to find out, but I'm curious...

It is normal. When you're in 5th gear and kick it into manual mode, the tranny is programmed to downshift into 4th. In lower gears in auto mode, the tranny won't downshift. It'll keep you in the same gear when you switch over.

yes or depending on speed/rpm, you can manually downshift another gear to get a good powerband. i have shifted into manual at higher speeds and it always goes to 4th. i have also experienced it downshifting if the tcm was close a downshift by switching to manual. for instance, it would have been in 2nd gear in drive and putting it into manual throws it into first.

so it'll always know what gear you're in and downshift to the NEXT lower gear when you engage into manual. very nice. and you can also upshift all the way to 5th in manual.

sometimes at lower speeds, it stays in the same gear when switched to manual mode. if the tcm determines it is close to a downshift that would normally occur in drive and you switch to manual then it will downshift. at higher speeds, say 45 and up then mine always defaults into 4th.

the loaner i had was doing that as well.. i think it figures youre going to the manual mode because you want to downshift anyway so it does it for you

my AT on flat straight surface was around 6Krmp at 140mph is I recall correctly. (this was in the middle of the desert with ZERO traffic)... instead of everyone posting rmp at 140 does anyone know the answer to the question though?... What happens if you went MM from full auto at that speed? Would it go to 4th like normal?

I know - will it downshift and bounce off the rev limiter?... Or stay in 5th?... It probably won't downshift at all at that speed whether you are in MM and try to downshift or in full auto and moving to MM... The reason I'm wondering is because I used to run an aftermarket ATF cooler and I downshifted at high speed once for deceleration (in addition to breaking) and the line pressure blew the return hose off and spewed trans fluid. I would think tough at some point you would not be able to downshift in any way at certain speeds... who's gonna try the 140mph to 4th test?
