How bout that, I always thought that down shifting was so you could be in a better gear to accelerate out of the corner...

^nah man, clearly you've been misinformed... Downshifting is to make your car sound cool like Fast and Furious

In which case you would want to downshift a few times during the quarter mile as well.

Very well written. I literally just had a guy riding in my 6mt the other day ask me if i was double clutching when i got into it ...i am going to direct him to this thread becuase he looked at me like i was stupid when i said theres no need to. although he was fired from a quick lube shop for forgetting to put oil in a car, and ive got 6 years shop experience. couldnt help but laugh

ive been driving stick for about 5 months now and there is still some good information in here that can help me become a better and more aware driver and ultimately prolong the life of my clutch. thanks you guys! 6mt for life!

I sure as hell underestimated this haha.

Just picked up my 04 G35 coupe last night, it's got a JWT clutch and flywheel, clutch is so heavy and the catch point is soooo high up its strange.

Probably not the best car to learn stick on lol but over time I'll get the hang of it.

I was having a decent amount of trouble getting rolling from first because of the clutch on this car is so hard. Hopefully I'll be able to adjust to it within a few days and get on the roads.

IF your catch point is way high, then it's not adjusted properly. Mine does not have that problem.

You will get used to it. My wife drives one (JWT) daily.

Yea I mean the clutch is very heavy so since the catch point is pretty high up I won't have to put so much pressure on it to switch gears.

Def gonna take some getting used to.

you need to properly adjust the throw of the pedal. my car was the same way when i got it. if you look at the pedals the clutch is probably sitting at rest a good 1/2-3/4" higher than the brake. there is an adjustment rod on the top of the pedal that goes into the clutch master cylinder.

will only take a few minutes, but if you arent DIY capable, then tell your mechanic. adjusting it too far one way or the other will cause the clutch to not fully engage or disengage.

Shifting Technique

Hey guys,

Got the rev-matching downshifts just fine. Don't use it all the time, a lot of time I'll go into neutral and just coast to a stop.

However, I'm still having issues taking off from a complete stop to 1st gear. Sometime it is smooth, sometimes it is a bit jerky.. I think since the OEM's engagement point is so high that I give it gas, and let off the clutch slowly, that the RPM's fall too low, and I get a jerky take off.. which brings me to a few questions:

1. Do you always push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor when shifting? I don't want to "ride the clutch"..


2. Second gear doesn't make much sense to me if driving a bit quick.. I find myself going directly from 1st to 3rd, or even 4th (if really gunning it). It's a smooth transition with no jerking.


3. Going from 1st to 2nd.. the shifter itself feels kinda notchy. It's not as smooth and straight down from say, 3rd to 4th. Is this common? It's not like blocking the motion, but it's not smooth either.


4. Anybody around NorCal that wants to maybe give me a few pointers?


Also, I'm really excited to install a Rev 4.0 RJM Clutch Pedal. I think that could make a world of difference. But then again, I see people arguing that we should keep the engagement point high vs low because it's better for takeoffs etc etc. Which circles back to my question about always pushing the clutch all the way to the floor when shifting..

I have been driving standards for 46 years and I still can't make a smooth start all the time in this car.
