G in the snow and winter weather.

wussup guys...i've been looking into getting a g35 for a bit now and wanted to get some feedback. I live in Chicago where the winters a filled with snow and icy weather. I was wondering if anybody uses their RWD g35 in the winter and how it handles? I know there is the g35x AWD option but i would prefer the RWD. I previously owned a 98 BMW M3 and that was horrific in the winter even with snow tires. Any opinions/experiences is greatly appreciated.

I have an x, but I live where it really snows. The RWD G35 has a nice weight ratio (52F/48R), so with good tires it should be good in the snow. And when I say good tires, I means something that does halfway decent in the snow. Tirerack.com has some nice survey results for a lot of tires. I have 2 sisters in the Chicago area, and both are driving on Nokian WR's per my suggestion, and they love 'em, and have no problems with Chicago or northern Michigan weather.

They're simply the best tire out there for mixed driving, and won't wear out in 2 seasons like most dedicated winter tires. They are the only all-season tire that has the severe use symbol (the mountain and snowflake), and they're rated for 50K miles. It's the only tire I'll put on my car for winter use as long as I live in snow country. They are a bit pricey (I paid around $750 for mine), but I'll have them for 5-7 winters. http://www.nokiantyres.com/

I live in the northwest suburbs and and have survived the past two Chicago winters with my 2005 RWD. I purchased a set of Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires and they have been amazing in the snow. I feel my car handles better in the snow than a FWD car with A/S tires. With the ABS and VDC systems, and if you get the sport package with the VLSD, they all work together extremely well in the snow. The only trouble I had this year was trying to back out on an incline of 8 inches of snow (was plowed in), but temporarily turning off VDC fixed that and I slowly spun my way out.

I didnt want to buy the AWD model when I bought my car back in 07. I wanted the RWD model and didnt worry too much about winter. People got around fine back in the day with RWD, and they didnt plow and salt the streets 10 times a day like they do now. So, I would suggest getting a deticated set of winter wheels and some good winter rubber if you do decide on RWD and you will be fine.

we just had almost 2 foot of snow. I did some driving with my 20's with summer tires and i thought it did really good. With some verrrrrry good snow tires i think that you should be ok.

ive put 3 different kinds of snow tires on my coupe so far and the best set is nokian wrg2. dunlop m3 were good, the yokohama w drives were better, but the nokian wrg2 are the best so far... 4in of snow and slush is a breeze and drivin at 90mph is not a problem. if u get these make sure to set the tire pressure at 38-42psi. below that its squishy, anything above that and you will be bouncing at every bump u hit.

I live in the Chicago suburbs but I commute downtown almost everyday, this was my first winter with the G and I have to say it is not to bad in the snow. I did buy a set of 17's with Blizzaks.. Just yesterday we had a snowstorm in Chicago and I already put my 19's back on and I have to say the Blizzaks made all the difference it was not fun. In my opinion if your going to drive it in the winter buy snow wheels/tires!

Couldn't agree more. I'm glad someone else out there has Nokians. I've had WR's and WRG2's for years and they're simply incredible in the snow, plus they don't wear out in 2-3 seasons like every other dedicated snow tire. And they're cheaper than most dedicated snows like Blizzaks.

Nokian FTW! (For The Winter

Finally, a topic where I can give some real insight

I'm from central Nebraska. We have sh!tty weather.

I can say the G definitely did better than I thought it would-- some snow tires and the VDC did a fairly good job of keeping things in line, so long as you aren't driving like a retard.

My wife and I made it over Vail pass (Colorado) in the G during a blizzard, right before they closed it. Needless to say it was not stress-free, but I made it... unlike some of the morons trying to drive 85+ on ice ... a 4x4 Range Rover can do that, right?

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth. Far better than expected, though I think I'd still rather go with an FX for the winter months.

I live in Chicago and have a 05 G35x.
With that being said you know it was a nasty winter, the X is seriously the best car I have ever driven in the snow!
I had a 06 G35 on loan from the dealer and got stuck within 15 minutes.
It did not have snow tires but the X handles so freakin nice with all seasons I could not ask for a better handling car in the snow...

Buy a beater, you have a short winter like me.

We got snow today, I was pretty stoked since it's the first snow my G has seen. VDC off and lots of nice parking lots on my way home.

I have a G35 coupe I just picked up, and am wondering how it will be in the snow. It cant be to much worse then my IS 300. Some great snow tires and I think I should be good to go.

get a set of nokian wrg2...they are the best but a little pricey...and they should last you 3-6 seasons, thats if u take them off during spring/summer. these tires are so great, you'll let your girl go down on you during a blizzard and you wont have to worry about traction...get them bro
